Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
Yes, but you need to update the Guest Additions for the Clipboard to work. And yours are not only old, they're the forked one the come with Ubuntu.00:00:21.837201 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.2.8 r120774 '5.2.8_KernelUbuntu'
Does that mean that you fixed your "Cannot install Virtual box extensions on Win10 host" problem after all?berntd wrote:I have installed the extension pack

Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
Unclear how to proceed. I just downloaded the latest from the Oracle site and that is how it came out.
How do I update the extensions?
How do I update the extensions?
Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
It was a problem. I had to eventually log out and log into the computer with the admin account and installed it from there. However, this can still be a problem as I am now running it in my normal user login. I am not sure.socratis wrote:Does that mean that you fixed your "Cannot install Virtual box extensions on Win10 host" problem after all?

Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
You've got to be careful with the terminology. There are two distinct things:
- The Extension Pack (ExtPack) gets installed on the host and it has to match the VirtualBox version. It provides functionality such as USB2-3, Webcam, VRDP, PXE, PCI passthrough on Linux hosts, VDI Encryption. You have to download it and install it separately from the main VirtualBox program, due to its license.
- The Guest Additions (GAs) get installed on the guest and it would be good to match the VirtualBox version, for anything other than enhanced graphics support. It provides functionality such as shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, pointer sharing (for PS/2 mice), enhanced graphics support. You do not have to download it separately from the main VirtualBox program, since it comes bundled with it.
OK, would you update the original thread with the solution then?I had to eventually log out and log into the computer with the admin account and installed it from there.

Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
I see. I did confuse the terminology as I only ever do this once in a blue moon. Once it words, I tend to forget after a while.
I have now installed the guest additions from the client as you suggested.
After doing it, it still does not work with sharing the clipboard though.
You mentioned that I need to update the guest additions?

No, you didn't.berntd wrote:I have now installed the guest additions from the client as you suggested.
Please try again. Read the user manual, ch. 4.2.2.00:00:21.880975 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.2.8 r120774 '5.2.8_KernelUbuntu'

Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
I am struggling.
I read that manual chapter but none of it seems to directly match up with what I have in front of me.
It is now not clear to me what I should be doing.
On the desktop of the guest (Linux) there is VBox_GAs_5.2.22
I double click that to mount it and the I run the software.
that states that I already have a version installed and should not continue.
Later on it states that my system is not set up to compile kernel modules and it needs gcc installed.
( I cannot paste exact results here as the clipboard is not working)
None of the documentation mentions any complications like that and last Friday, this did run ok but you said that it did not.
Is there any other simple help I can look though to get this working?
Regards
Bernt

Re: Cannot share clipboard Windows 10 host Ubuntu client
Well, technically you need to uninstall the custom GAs first, but I don't believe you're at that level. You could search on the web on how to uninstall packages from Ubuntu. But, I would ignore that warning and go ahead and install the VirtualBox GAs, given that you take care of the following...berntd wrote:that states that I already have a version installed and should not continue.
Well then, you need to install gcc. And I bet that it doesn't only talk about "gcc", but "make" and "perl" as well, right? Generally speaking, this is a guest issue, something that you should be searching for help in Ubuntu forums, but the simplest thing to do (if memory serves me right) is to execute the command:berntd wrote:my system is not set up to compile kernel modules and it needs gcc installed
sudo apt-get install gcc make perl
Of course it won't! You wouldn't expect your PC's manufacturer to include instructions on how to install the operating system of your choice, would you? Same with VirtualBox. This is a guest issue, not a VirtualBox one. What if your OS already included those packages?berntd wrote:None of the documentation mentions any complications like that
So, install the requested packages and re-try the GAs installation...

At this pint in time:
THANK YOU.
It seems to work at least for the clipboard!
Cheers
