Re: Virtualbox auf externer Festplatte?
Are you sure you want VirtualBox (the program) on an external hard drive, or you want your VMs in an external hard drive? Because VirtualBox doesn't take too much space, it's the VMs that take all the space. In that case see Moving a VM for existing VMs. For new VMs, you can change the VirtualBox Preferences » General » Default Machine Folder.
Virtualbox on external hard disk? is that possible, if so, how does it work?
But, the performance is going to be terrible. Even with a USB3, the transfer rate is not even close to that of an internal HD. Not even close...

The performance will greatly depend on how much disk I/O the guest OS does, will it not? So it may be practical with some guest OS's, less so with others. It may also be possible to tune a guest OS.
Still, performance will be worse than internal drives. However main concern with external drives is the near certainty that you will one day unplug the drive while the VM is running. If timed badly this has the potential to severely corrupt a VDI, it could render a VHD unreadable.

Maybe, but i don't feel any worse performance.mpack wrote:Still, performance will be worse than internal drives.
I'm only work within VM, so i never unplug the drive while the VM is running.mpack wrote:However main concern with external drives is the near certainty that you will one day unplug the drive while the VM is running.
