[Resolved] XP Guest will not restart after pc is powered down. (#18006)

Post by Peter1701 »

ModEdit; related ticket: #18006: VirtualBox 5.2.18-124319-Win, will not load XP after PC is turned off
I've just started to use VirtualBox-5.2.18-124319-Win.and I can't work out where I'm going wrong. My Host is Windows 7, 64bit, I've installed Win XP 32bit. and also on other occasions 64, Base memory 192 mb, chipset, P11X3, Execution cap 100%, I've also installed Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.18. I can get everything to work perfectly until I turn my PC off. and then I just an error message, please see images. The only way I can temporality resolve the issue is to uninstall Virtual box, and delete files from both the registry and windows system 32 driver file, turn the computer off, reboot and reinstall. Then all works well again, until the next reboot. Does anyone know of a fix. I've included the log and images of the most common error messages. Thank you Peter1701

Just to add my ticket number, which is 18006 and I've come from bugtracker.

It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, yours is not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "Invalid".

The bug tracker is not a place for discussions, the forums are.

You have a hardening issue. Please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues for some generic guidelines/ideas. Those are guidelines, you have to use your judgement as to which program might be responsible...

If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please open a new thread in the VirtualBox on Windows Hosts section of the forums. Please be sure to mention that you came from the bug tracker and include the ticket number.

Oh, and don't forget to attach a ZIPPED version of the VBoxHardening.log, the one that's mentioned in the error dialog.
The above is a response by socratis, although clearly not happy with my putting my question in the wrong place. For which I apologize, I'm not used to useing these tools and I'm not an IT specialist. so I'm limited in what I know how to do. I've carried out His or her instructions as best I can. I don't have malware bites and i wouldn't know what other programs to disable and the procedure afterwards. So I'm hoping that somewhere out there someone can tell me how to fix in in the terms of Virtual Box for Dummies.

Also I've tried to include the hardening log but it is too big to add to the post, so I turned it into a text file, which isn't allowed, so I turned it into an image. none of which worked.
Suggestions? email perhaps?

We can't say anything without the hardening log referred to in the error message. Zip before attaching.

Hi
Thanks for responding. I hope you don't mind, but I'll answer both the above here.
As for finding a program that conflicts, I've tried this, however unless I have an easy way of clearing the field for VB, I'll probably prioritise the conflicking program over VB. Although it would be good to use old programs on XP, it's not a manager problem, at this time, if I can't.

As for sending the log via a zip, I wasn't sure that I had that facility, so I checked through my programs and found one. So I've zipped the hardening log and have uploaded it.

Every Windows PC since and including the XP era has had that feature. Just right click on a selected file or files, Send to | Compressed folder.

Regarding your problem, I suggest that you read the FAQ referenced above and try the diagnostic tests mentioned there, including uninstalling the AV and uninstalling any theme hacks. I should warn that Win7 hosts do seem to be prone to corruption of the certificates database, but we needn't anticipate the nightmare scenario before you've done the tests.

I choose to ignore the observation about the zip program on all OS. However I will say that ever since I started to use PCs, I've always had to install one. But, please lets move on.
As I already said, I'm not good with the details of the PCs OS.

However I've looked at the log and the issue seems to be (lacks WinVerify trust)
Log

Is there a way to add WinVerifyTrust?

That's not what causes the error. You are going to be seeing these messages. Always. That's not the error message you're looking for. What you should be looking for, as per the FAQ, is the ExitCode at the end of the log.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

exit code = ExitCode=0x1 (rcNtWait=0x0, rcNt1=0x0, rcNt2=0x103, rcNt3=0x103, 2851 ms, the end);

Whatever that means?

Did you read the FAQ? Apparently not because you'd know that ExitCode=1 means there's an error. Please take a moment and read the FAQ, we don't like repeating information that's already written down in a FAQ format.

Well at least I know now what you are talking about and referring to.
I've looked at FQA and can't find what you are alluding to. Would it be possible to just add the link to what you want me to look at?
This will be my last attempt to try and get this program to work. As I said, I can live without it.
I'll see what else is out there.

I gave the link in the ticket, and mpack repeated it here in his first response, along with what to look for later on:

I have read the link, when you first sent it and even after reading again after being told what part of the log I was to look at. I still can't see that error code. All it says is that dlls can interfere with it. Which has aways been the problem with conflicts from other programs.
VB doesn't like Windows 7.
And being told that the log is saying that I have an error, well tell me something I don't know.
Apart from deleting one program after the other. There doesn't seem to be a constructive discussion pertaining to a definitive answer to the error.
Further, why ask for the log, if you didn't intend to read it. Surly, if all you wanted was the last line, then that is all that needs to be sent, no?
Seeing as it is now quite obvious that the problem is a conflict issue and probably not a hardening one.
It seems that unless I am prepared to change the host and remove all the programs, which I am not. Then I will not be able to conveniently use your program and the same goes for other users of win 7. Who may have similar programs.
So thank you for trying, but it looks like nothing is oing to be resolved.
Put it down to my stupidity, incompetence and lack of IT know how.

You need to understand a few basics before coming into one or more wrong conclusions. So, take a step back, relax and try to resolve the problem. Unless you want to throw the towel, in which case we can turn our attention to people that are willing to resolve the problem.
  1. VirtualBox does like Windows 7. I have personally been running it for years, in both 32 and 64-bit Windows. So have thousands and tens of thousands of other users.
  2. Having an error is one thing. Knowing for sure that it's a hardening error is another, that's why we need to look at the ExitCode.
  3. Knowing that there's a hardening problem is just that; we know there's a problem. We don't know which program from the myriad of programs you might have installed might be responsible. We have "categories" of programs. For example Firefox/Chrome and other browsers are not there. AutoCAD and Matlab are not there. Notepad++ is not there. Antivirus are. Web-protection nannies are. Web-banking programs are. Invasive programs are. Do you see a pattern?
  4. We ask for the log in case we spot one of the known offenders. It's not certain that the log will contain the program that causes it, I wish that was the case. I'd tell you "Uninstall XYZ" and we would be done with it.
  5. This is not a conflict issue, it's an issue where a 3rd party program, that is not properly signed, wants to invade into VirtualBox's memory space. That is not allowed and VirtualBox quits. Find that program and you'll be all set. That goes for ALL programs who pretend to improve security, while at the same time breaking other software.

Cool
Now, that is helpful and really, really clear.
Now, all l need is a list of the possible culprits and I can check to see if I have any, get back to you and aske how to stop it, if I cant do it myself.
Meanwhile, when I get time, so much has been wasted on this. I will read again your last post and see which of my many programs, may be effecting it.

Thank you

Okay, thanks it's something to do with security software.
So, let me see what I have, apart from Microsoft security essentials, which hasn't caused me an issue to date and I'm not replacing it.
On my last deletion of VirtualBox from both the Registry and System driver folder, I disabled my virus checker and then reinstalled VB. This made no difference, I've also added the Virtual box to the virus checker to allow it through, this has also made no difference.
I've also tried to slow down the startup HKEY-LOCAL- MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VBoxDrv and changed the start value from 1to 3. this to made no difference.
I haven't removed any stray files from the registry or driver folder, in relation to Microsoft security essentials. I don't know if that would have made any difference.

I await your feedback in your next post.
Thank you
