[Solved] Black screen on Windows 10 Pro with VirtualBox 5.1.2

Post by Sandor H »

Registered and fully updated Windows 10 Pro. I downloaded VirtualBox today (button says 5.2 but it redirects to 5.1.2) so it is 5.1.2. It is strange already since O/S is 64 bit and it does not offer the installation of 64 bit Linux systems, only 32 bit ones. So I tried to install both Ubuntu and Debian. The result is about the same, boot starts, on Debian there is the installation windows (so I choose either GUI or command line install), on Ubuntu the little boot logo shows in the lower area.

Then black screen. Nothing happens. VirtualBox does not react to sending the Shutdown signal. It looks fully stuck. I am running several VirtualBox instances (usually on Linux and OSX and all work fine, except for this one).

The log shows as attached.

Uh... no it doesn't. The button leads to the downloads page, which clearly labels several download options, including 5.2.12 for Windows hosts, which definitely links to the 5.2.12 installer.

And just to make things weirder, your log file was created by 5.2.12.

I suggest that you verify the md5 checksum of your Ubuntu ISO file. Oh, and I'd increase graphics RAM to 128MB (16MB isn't very good for a modern desktop OS).

p.s. In future please end the VM session before copying the session log. A truncated log file is often not very useful.

p.p.s. Not a "Windows Hosts" question, since the central question concerns the guest and not the host. Moving this topic to "Linux Guests".

You are right. So the issue is with 5.2.12.

I tried to increase settings to 128MB before, now I rechecked, the result is the same. The box is a G4560 (onboard video card) one so there are not many things to juggle around with (pretty much uses shared memory from the 8GB total available).

The very same Ubuntu image works properly in a 4 years old dell Linux box in openSUSE. It looks to me that the windows build has something wrong in it; hmm, I might be wrong...

You will need to address/fix the VT-x availablity. Your Pentium G4560 certainly supports VT-x, so it's a matter of enabling it in the BIOS. See your PC's manufacturer help on how to do this. Also, make sure that nothing else has an exclusive hold on the VT-x.

You are a wiz. It was a bios setting. Thank you very much.

The virtualbox blackscreen problem on Windows 10 can also be caused by enabling HyperV.

Careful - the above discussion is a year old. 5.1.2 or 5.2.12 would both simply refuse to run the VM if Hyper-v was enabled. Semi-tolerance to Hyper-v was not introduced until v6.0.0 and is still having the bugs worked out as of 6.0.8 (besides requiring a recent version of Win10).
