Not a "Windows Hosts" question. Topic moved to "Linux Guests" forum.

IME you should also be asked the question "do you want to force dismount the old media?" (or words to that effect), which should let you fix the problem.

I noticed something strange. If i right click on the CD icon on the virtual machine status bar there is a check mark on the VBoxGuestAddition.iso which means that the guest addition cd image is inserted, but if i type 'mount' it doesn't appear to be mounted to the file system.

Eject it. Then re-insert it from the Devices menu. And after you're done with the GAs installation, eject it from within the guest. The last part is what you didn't do, that's what led you to where you are right now.

I ejected and reinserted the disk but it still doesn't appear mounted to the file system. Anyway, i installed cifs utilities and was able to mount smb share from my windows host without installing the guest additions. Don't know why the guest addition disk doesn't mount to the file system. Haven't had this problem before.

Did you try to manually mount the virtual CD/DVD drive?
Many systems don't mount CDs automatically anymore.

Yes, that was the problem. I had to mount the CD drive first. Thanks!

I have same problem - using Virtual Box 5.2.24, installing Debian 9 on Windows10. Can you provide more detailed instructions on ejecting/remounting? I can see the relevant files if look on /media/cdrom0, including autorun.sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run, and other files, but I get this "unable to install" message. The directory 64Bit has the Readme.txt file instructing me to run VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64 /extract /D=C:\Drivers, but this command is not found.
