[Solved] Windows 7 Guest freezes accidentally

Post by ceugster »

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro with High Sierra as Host, VirtualBox Version 5.2.0 and a Windows 7 Guest. When I start the guest, then after a while unused, the Guest freezes. The log shows following lines (excerpt, the full log is attached):

00:00:02.678330 GUI: 2D video acceleration is disabled
00:00:02.046291 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000004000000 (67 108 864, 64 MB)
The 3D acceleration is disabled as well in the VM settings. I would strongly direct you to enable both of them and then re-install the Guest Additions (GAs). And since you're at it, you may want to increase the vRAM to 128 or even 256 MB.
00:00:01.960962 File system of '/Volumes/Virtual Machines/VirtualBox/...
Is this VM running of an external hard drive? Perhaps a USB3 one? Maybe the HD is going to sleep after some time of inactivity and the "connection" is lost?
00:00:02.046262 [/Devices/usb-xhci/0/Config/] (level 4)
You have enabled USB3 on a Win7 guest, a guest that doesn't have native support for USB3. Have you also installed the "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver"?
00:00:02.045889 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
00:00:02.364219 CPUM: Physical host cores: 4
You have given your VM 1 vCPU out of 4 that your host has available. You could definitely afford a 2nd vCPU assigned to your guest, it's going to make a great impact on your VM performance.
VirtualBox VM 5.2.0 r118431 darwin.amd64 (Oct 18 2017 08:28:11) release log
00:00:14.011623 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.1.28 r117968 '5.1.28'
You have not updated your GAs since you last upgraded VirtualBox. Please do. You're going to have issues, mainly with your 2 shared folders.

And finally, go to your Win7 guest Power/Energy settings and make sure that the guest is set to Maximum performance, no sleep, no screen saver, no power down the hard drives, nothing that could make the guest go to "sleep" and hard to wake up.

Hi Socratis

many thanks for your help. Some of those settings I made on tips I found in other Threads. Not always helpful it seems. I think it was the energy part that caused the freeze. I adaptet the settings following your hints. Thank you very much indeed!
