Kernel driver not installed error

Post by GrowleyMonster »

Using Ubuntu 16.04. Installed VirtualBox 5.0 with no error messages. I created a virtual machine using an existing VHD file. I got the following two messages:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine xp.

The virtual machine 'xp' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {f30138d4-e5ea-4b3a-8858-a059de4c93fd}

and....

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please install virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

So, I opened up a terminal and typed "sudo modprobe vboxdrv" I got the following in terminal:

modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Required key not available

And as for the DKMS package, I don't know where to find that. I really need to get this thing working because there is one program that I really need to run in WinDOHs. It does not work in Wine because it needs access to USB port. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have the suspicion that you got VirtualBox from the Ubuntu "store". This is the distro's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
