Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Hi everybody,
I have been trying for days to make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest but still not working.
Of course I have installed the Guest addition. I also googled it to try all the troubleshooting available on google but nothing work.
What is strange is that I can copy/paste text from the host to the Guest terminal but that's the only thing I can do.
Thanks a lot if you know how to solve this problem because I don't have any additional idea that's why I'm posting here...
Best

I'd like to see some concrete proof about that if you don't mind.Joyen wrote:Of course I have installed the Guest addition.
- Follow a "start the VM from cold-boot" / "observe error" / "shutdown the VM" cycle.
- With the VM shut down completely (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
- Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Hello,
Thank you to care about my problem.
So I have done what you said and I attached the log.
What I tried is first DnD a file, then copy/paste but the paste don't even display when right clicking and finally DnD a folder, on this last action it display a windows saying "dropping the files but I can't see the files anywhere...
Every time I tried to paste to the guest desktop from a random folder of the host.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
The GAs you have installed in this VM are not from VirtualBox, they are from some third party fork. Please purge the fork GAs and install the VirtualBox GAs, then let's see if we still have a problem.VBox.log wrote: 00:00:15.033580 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.1.28 r117968 '5.1.28_Debian'
p.s. I see that you have something called "/Users/Joyen/Downloads/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso", mounted in the VM. The GAs are bundled with VirtualBox, there was never a need for a separate download. Just click the "Devices|Insert Guest Additions CD..." menu option and the proper GAs will be mounted in the VM.
Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
The .iso I got it by opening the original VirtualBox package, I just copy/paste it in my downloads. Then I click the little CD right below the VM and mount it that way.
So normally it shouldn't be a third party.
I would like to try what you said though but I can't figure out where is : "Just click the "Devices|Insert Guest Additions CD..." menu option "
Sorry I guess it's should be easy but I'm a beginner on VM

There's an easier way. With the VM open, go to the menu: Devices » Insert Guest Additions CD Image...Joyen wrote:The .iso I got it by opening the original VirtualBox package, I just copy/paste it in my downloads. Then I click the little CD right below the VM and mount it that way.
It's almost the same thing, without opening, copying, pasting.

For future reference :-
- Please attach images locally, not using a paysite such as DropBox. This ensures that attachment links can't be broken in the future.
- Also, please crop images, i.e. don't include the background when showing an error dialog. Since images are stored locally we don't want to waste server space (I cropped the above image).
Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Ok Sorry. So this time when I mount the Image by that way it ask me if I want to run it and when I click run I get the attached error message.
I tried several time but always the same message...
Thanks for your help

Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
There is a limit to how much time we can spend teaching you how to use the host (or guest) OS, we're really here to address VirtualBox problems. Besides that the last error message posted is completely useless for remote diagnostic purposes, but should have been instantly understood by you, i.e. you should know that you tried to run software on a drive that is no longer connected, but there's no way we could know that from the information given.
Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
Hi, Thanks for your reply. Maybe I am stupid, still can't figure out how to make it work.
The message I attached in my last post display when I just mount the image on the CDROM so it is not disconnected. So I don't understand what is your meaning and I really don't understand what is the problem, I spend long time on it, it seems a problem of the software...
It works well with windows though, I don't understand why it is such a pain to make it work with linux.
Thank you very much if you can help ?

Re: Can't make the copy/paste and DnD working on Kali Guest
I copy paste from the cdrom and then run it. Now it's ok I don't get that error. Maybe that was your meaning when you said it's disconnected.
But after restart, still cannot drag and drop. When I want to drag a file from host to guest there is a green "+" sign but when I drop it in the guest it just disappear, it doesn't copy...
So now for sure I have the right guest addition installed and it is not working so there is a problem somewhere in the software I guess.
