Odd sound at start of VM.

Post by isgdre »

When I start a VM I get a lot of crackling, sputtering from the sound card. It seems to last for about 10-20 seconds and then is fine after that (for each VM independently). It's consistent. This is new to the Bata 2 (didn't try bata 1). But didn't happen in V5.1.22 or before.

The guests are Windows 10 pro, Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, and Pro N.
The Host machine has a Asus xonar dsx audio device and here is the systeminfo on it.

Can you please supply the VBox.log when reproduced the issue? Without the log there's not much we can do ... Thanks.

Also, can you please provide a dump of the crash you were experiencing? See https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump about how to do this.

Looking at the core dump link, it assumes you still have access to the Host computer. I did not, the whole thing hung.
Would there be anything useful in the VLog? *IF* the cpu halted then it will not get a chance to log anything. Is there a verbose mode for the vlog that would help?

Hm ...if the host really hung that hard that this must be something more serious. So the host entirely has frozen and did not recover without doing a restart, right?

Does this also happen if you disable audio completely?

Had to hold the power button for 5 seconds to get it to power off.
I could try pulling one of the power cable and see if it beeps. If that would help diagnose just how dead it is. I'm not sure if that's just hardware doing that but I think the beep is coming from the mother board speaker.

By completely disabling sound I'm going to assume you mean just remove it from the VM definition and not removing sound card from the host. I'm ok to do this as a test but it's not a solution as the sound is required in the VM guests.

Ok, just wanted to be sure, thanks.

Regarding disabling sound: Yes right, completely disabling audio via the VM settings. This would help pinpointing the issue further.

So, Things broke going from V5.1.22 -> V5.1.24. Still didn't work in V5.1.26. Tried Beta 2 and got different problems. First sound then crashing. Now V5.1.28 seems stable again. I'm thinking it was the sound changes that caused my grief and it looks like you also included that change in Beta 3. I'll try in a bit but have to get caught back up again.

I also have crackling sound on BETA 3 (118015), I viewed a Youtube video and 3 minutes into the video the sound became so distorted (like an analogue amplifier with low power/drained batteries) I had to stop it. No crashes, however..

The physical computer has I7 7500U and a Realtek Audio controller, the VM Audio controller is Intel HD Audio.

@Simple07: Which guest / host combination is this? Which audio driver for the VM is being used? Please attach a VBox.log here. Thanks!

Also, please have a look at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/AudioDebug for helping us to further diagnose the problem.

Sorry for coming back late,

The Host is Windows 10 Build 15063.608 and the Guest is Windows 7 SP1 X64. It is also happening on the X86 and Win XP as well, and probably on other Windows 10 (the latest I have is 16299.0, released last night).

I have attached all log files for the Win 7 x64 machine (because I have removed 5.2.00 and reinstalled 5.1.28/29 then back again to test things).

Below is the RealTek Audio controller's hardware ID from the Host OS.

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_280B&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000

Could you please have a look at the (updated) guide over at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/AudioDebug about how to enable audio debugging and how to diagnose this further? That would greatly help pinpointing the problem further. Thanks!

OK, I will probably do it tonight once I am home. I 'll keep you updated.

Update:
I performed the test as per the instructions on the link provided, the results are that the sound is fine on the recorded WAV files. I have attached the newer log files again and one small WAV file (size limitations).

I also noticed that the Video is ahead of the Audio by probably half a second during youtube play on the Virtual Machine.

By the way, how to disable this WAV dumping, I tried :
VBoxManage setextradata Win-7X64 "VBoxInternal2/Audio/Debug/Enabled" "false",
No luck, then:
VBoxManage setextradata Win-7X64 "VBoxInternal2/Audio/Debug/Disabled" "true"
But it still creates .WAV files and the ..\AppData\Local\Temp folder is filling up!!

OK, I edited "Win-7X64.vbox" and found and removed the above <ExtraData> statements, the system is no longer creating .WAV files.

If you run just 'VBoxManage setextradata Win-7X64 VBoxInternal2/Audio/Debug/Disabled" the extradata key will be deleted. There's no need to edit the configuration files manually.
