I updated a Ubuntu 16.10 Linux guest on Windows 10 to Ubuntu 17.04 and now the VM doesn't boot anymore. Please see the attached log:
If I boot into recovery (grub: Ubuntu, with Linux 4.10.0-30-generic (recovery mode)) the VM hangs on "Booting SMP configuration":
From grub I can also boot to Ubuntu, with Linux 4.8.0.59-generic: this seems to work just fine.
Thanks for your help!
I completely uninstalled Guest Additions before the upgrade.Ubuntu 17.04 won't boot on Windows 10: stuck on "booting smp"

In place upgrades are always iffy even on metal. I would first try to change the audio to Intel HD or disable it and see if it continues to boot.

No change with audio disabled. Will try tomorrow with a fresh install, but I expect the same result.

I fresh-installed Ubuntu 17.04 (full-wipe and reinstall). Same problem:

Re: Ubuntu 17.04 won't boot on Windows 10: stuck on "booting smp"
I found a workaround: Since the message was related to SMP, I limited the VM to 1 core (previously it had 2 cores). After this, it boots as expected.

I removed the audio and kept only one proc, and it now boots.
Thanks a lot!

Same with 16.04 on VirtualBox 5.2.4r119785.
Was able to keep the audio on, but had to limit to one proc to get it working.

Hmm, somehow my Settings -> System -> Acceleration -> Paravirtualization Interface was set to 'legacy'
After I changed it to 'default' I was able to increase the processor count again.

It also worked for me, thanks!
