Is anyone able to upgrade an existing 10.11.4 VM to 10.12.5?

Post by IOOI »

I have a running 10.12.5 VM, so it's not the question where to get one from.

But now I am struggling to configure a new one (for another purpose on another host).

So I created a 10.11.4 VM which went flawless and then to upgrade it to 10.12.5 by downloading and running the installer inside the VM. This did not work at all.

I once did this, this is for sure, this way the running 10.12.5 VM was created. But I did this a while before 10.12.5 was out and also the VBox version was different.

So the question is: can others still upgrade their VMs to 10.12.5?

Not directly from the 10.12.4 or the 10.12.5 installer, no. If you can get your hands on a 10.12.3 installer, you can then update to 10.12.5 with the combo installer. But not directly. See:

I've found https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1905 and I don't think it gets more official. Trying this now and then reporting back …

That's not the installer, that's the combo updater. It will not help you. You have to have 10.12(.0), .1, or .2 for it to work.

I found this out myself too. So this ship has sailed for now. No 10.12 for me until somebody merciful at innotek headquarters fixes that boot issue …

Read this: https://red-sweater.com/blog/1566/the-f ... e-installs
Then this: https://7labs.heypub.com/tips-tricks/ma ... nload.html
And if you got so far, download this: http://osxapps.itunes.apple.com/apple-a ... 8369.pfpkg
and: http://osxapps.itunes.apple.com/apple-a ... 146329.pkg

Note that the actual downloads are from Apple. Based on the first two articles, you'll know in theory what to do to install 10.12.

PS. As my signature suggests, please use the "POST REPLY" button, unless you're quoting specific passages.

(OT: Some of the Virtualbox people at Oracle still have Weinstadt as company address, but it is not Achim's Innotek anymore... ;) )

Thanks a lot for your tip, this is an very interesting approach to get the Installer. But that gave me another idea: have a look in the 10.11 VM from which my working 10.12 was created. If you can download the version of the installer from the moment you "purchased" it then I might be fine. And voila, I even did not need to download it again, inside my 10.11 VM I found a 10.12 installer from May, Version 12.0.49 I hope this one will work.

That may be the version of the installer itself, not the OSX one. If you want to get that, do:
  • Show the installer's contents.
  • Navigate to and mount Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg.
  • Navigate to and open /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist.
  • Search for "ProductVersion". Helpful also to look at "ProductBuildVersion".
Shamelessly adapted technique from Johann N. Löfflmann's Weblog. Compare your build with the official Apple list.

I know. But the version is less than that of the 10.12.5 Installer
If you want to get that, do:
  • Show the installer's contents.
  • Navigate to and mount Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg.

    Open the BaseSystemResources.pkg found in /Volumes/OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/Packages/
  • Navigate to and open /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist.
  • Search for "ProductVersion". Helpful also to look at "ProductBuildVersion".
it is plain 10.12, ProductBuildVersion 16A323
