USB Issue OSX Yosemite VM Win7

Post by Bassman »

I am using an early 2015 MacBook Air with Yosemite version 10.10.5 running VM Win7 Ultimate. When I start the VM I get the following error:
VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS. I have spent the last two days searching on the internet trying to figure out what to do so Windows will recognize my USB HD. BTW I am using VirtualBox-5.03-102467-OSX.dmg with Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Exte...5.0.2-102096.vbox-extpack. I have been unable to find any posts with a similar setup. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

@Bassman
You are not alone. I have the similar problem, and I have spent a few days searching forums and trying suggestions. Unfortunately no solution has resolved my USB Disk problem.

My setup:
Host:
Mac OSX: 10.10.5
VirtualBox: 5.0.4 r102546
USB device: Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack: 5.0.4r102546 Installed

Guest:
Ubuntu 14.04

Error message from virtualbox when starting guest (ubuntu):
Failed to attach the USB device Seagate Expansion Desk [0100] to the virtual machine patal-vbox-ubuntu-002.

Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

I have tried various things to without success such as:
1. Created a filter for the USB device in "Settings - Ports - USB" (note at this point the guest VM is not started)
2. Inserting the USB drive (listed above) and then ejecting it using the eject button in Finder. Then starting the guest (ubuntu) VM.

Result: As soon as the VM starts the error above appears.
1. Created an any filter for the USB 2.0 device in "Settings - Ports - USB" (note at this point the guest VM is not started)
2. Started the VM guest. Once the guest had started I logged on.
3. Insert the USB disk

Result: Error message reported above.

Hope we find a solution. I will update this post if I find a solution.

The "Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB" is supposed to be USB 3.0. Did you try the xHCI controller?

Windows 7 doesn't support USB 3.0 natively btw. So you would need to install the appropriate drivers.

You're right. the Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB" is a USB 3.0. I tried the xHCI controller instead as you suggested. I no longer get the "Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS" message. However I get something else. I will start a new thread for the new problem.

Thanks for the help loukingjr

I had the same problem with Yosemite and Window XP.
I turned out the solution was quite simple when I inspected the "Ports" tab of the VM. A message indicated that I had to install "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack".
Being a new member I can't post URLs but look for the string and you'll find the right page.
Pay attention to the version of Virtual Box and the Extension Pack, in case upgrade before you install the package. Once download just double click the package, while VBox is open, and a window in VBox while guide you.
Consider anyway that there are not USB 3 drivers for Windows XP so you need to configure your device as USB 2.

Hi Folks,

I am also using a Mac OSX 10.10.5 host, and a Windows 7 Pro guest.

For me the issue was that I needed to install the Intel driver for the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for my guest Windows 7 box. I can't post URLs but just search for "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for Intel® 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family"

After that, I was able to view the connected USB drive - Western Digital My Passport Ultra in my case.

Hope that's helpful.

I've downloaded the file but there was no installation wizard it's just a zip folder with stuff in it... how do I install it? also no usb device will work on my virtual machine not even USB 2,
when I plug in USB 2 drives it will seem to read it and then it will say installing device software and then it will fail. why?

Host OS X 10.10.5
Guest OS Windows 7 Pro

I did have to shut down the VM and make sure "USB 3.0 (xHCI) Controller" is selected under machine settings, ports, USB tab.

Download the file from Intel:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... set-Family

Inside the zipped folder should be a setup.exe file. Run the setup.exe file and subsequent installation and it will install USB 3.0 drivers.

Once I did this, I no longer experienced the error and I was able to use my USB 3.0 drive in Windows 7 fine.

Hello

I have tried running this for Win10 and the install failed. I have posted the log here for anyone that can tell me what is wrong. I've been using VM for about 9 months, and have not had to do significant alterations, but I need to connect an external drive because my virtual drive is almost full.

I got a message that install failed unknown error.

You tried to install device drivers for Win10 in Win7, 99% it will fail (which it did).
Why did you do this? Windows 10 has native support for USB3, you do not need any other drivers.
With the VM shut down, right-click in the VM on the VirtualBox Manager, Show Log, save the 1st one, zip it and attach it.
