Xalan / Xerces -vs- internal

Can anyone tell me the resulting difference when compiling the OSE with the -internal switch verses compiling it with Xalan/Xerces?

I did a quick google but didn't really see anything regarding that

Xalan/Xerces is not needed anymore for VBox >= 1.6.
