* SOLVED *
I missed the solution posted by shadowless: turn on Hyper-V and then turn off again.
That worked for me. Thank you!!

That solution didn't work for me. I had to revert the Windows 10 anniversary update.

OK... I found out how to do it
I turned off Hyper-V
And updated to Virtual Box 5.1.2

Now all works fine

I am going to try updating to VB 5.1.6

To turn off Hyper V go to Windows Features... use Settings and Search For Windows Features... that will show you how to get there
In that you locate the Hyper-V element and just uncheck that
The system will reboot

I attached an image of the Windows Features settings panel showing the action

OK you guys.... my thanks.... many many thanks to all of you... you are a great lot

I had much trouble and tried to install and uninstall nothing worked

But finally I figured out how to disable the Hyper-V feature (see above post) and now it all works great and I updated to Virtual Box 5.1.6 and it works great with allll of my virtual machines.

I am so thankful to you guys for all the input that helped me fix this aggravating problem

Was still having issues after trying all of the above "System Stop_Exception". I can't dual boot (reasons set in stone) yet Virtual Box and Hypervisor ran side by side before...So Hypervisors still enabled in BIOS and the service is still running.

I did note that the network (cabled ethernet in my case) had been reset and there were no virtual adapters present which gave me a clue.

What I did to cure it:
Ran Virtual Box - found the VM I was trying to access, turned off all network cards. Boot into VM (phew - its still there) and then shutdown. Change settings of VM to reenable the card in question and then reboot. Ta da....takes bow.

Systems an Win10 Pro x64 i5 on an Asus H81m-Plus, 16gb RAM, 3 SSDs, Bitlocker (software) enabled data drives.

Hope that helps someone.

Happy to see you solved too!
I am working with VB 5.1.7 now (rev 110792) because yesterday, before solving the problem, I also tried to install this test-version.
It works fine, but I think that VB 5.1.6 works well too.

Updated to VB 5.1.6 everything fine XP working, except lost my PC network. Then Win10 anniversary came along Win10 Pro 1607 Bld 14393.187. VB opened fine but after initialising XP got the bsod and total shutdown. Tried uncheck, reboot, check hyper-v but nothing. How do I get XP back?

I've tried various versions of VB (including the latest) on my host running Win10 64bit with the anniversary update. The VB starts without a problem, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get a blue screen.

What I noticed is from Help menu when I select to check for an update I always get the message: "The network operation failed with the following error: Unknown reason"

Also checking connection on the virtual card from the control panel it reports there is no internet connection.

I had no such problems before the anniversary update

But my VM 5.1.6 was working fine hosting XP under Win10.
Until the Win10 anniversary then VM still boots up fine, no detectable issues but Starting XP, initialising black screen and then BSOD with system service error.
Yes I unchecked rebooted and then rechecked Hyper-V, nothing.
So is my issue the same as everyone else or is mine a different shade?
Some guidance, any guidance would be a help. Where do I start looking to resolve my BSOD

Hello,

I'm using Windows 10 Home Edition, so there is no Hyper-V capability .
Since the recent update, nothing seems to happen when launching Virtualbox.exe , and an error is posted in the application log:

It worked before the Windows upgrade...
Although there is no Hyper-V in the Home edition, the task manager > Services > vmic* shows 8 Hyper-V services that are all in the stopped state.

Have you tried to uninstall Virtual Box altogether then reinstalling it again?

If that does not work... maybe try to install an earlier version than the latest one.... always UNINSTALLING first.

Also still check that HyperV is in fact not operational by using the Windows Features application and look through the list.

Uninstalled VB 5.1.6, Hyper-V was checked, reinstalled VB 5.1.6 plus Essentials.
Started XP yet again BSOD.
So where now?
