[INSTALL] Verifying "VirtualBox.pkg"... never clears -- El Cap 10.11.4

Post by Jeffsf »

Moderator edit to sum up the issue

There seems to be a problem with OSX 10.11.x when verifying/opening files and not just the VirtualBox.pkg. The problem is not seen by all users, but it is affecting a lot of them. There is no known permanent solution or explanation to the problem so far. There are a couple of workarounds though that you can try (listed in the order that you should try them):
  • Reboot your Mac.
  • Open the "Installer.app" and then select the "VirtualBox.pkg". The app is in /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app
  • Run the command as an administrator/owner:
sudo installer -package /Volumes/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.pkg -target /
    or
       sudo open /Volumes/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.pkg
  • Delete the authorization database of your Mac with:
       sudo mv /var/db/auth.db /var/db/auth.db.old
If you think you could help, please see this post viewtopic.php?f=8&t=77122&start=45#p363651.

Again, this is a problem with OSX, not VirtualBox. A quick search for "mac stuck at verifying" will convince you.

Original post follows
I've downloaded VirtualBox-5.0.16-105871-OSX.dmg and verified that the sha-256 checksum is correct.

The dmg mounts on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) running OS X 10.11.4

When I try to run the installer, VirtualBox.pkg, either directly from the mounted dmg, or by copying it to the internal drive, it hangs at Verifying "VirtualBox.pkg"... for at least well over an hour. The progress bar does not advance.

I have "admin" privileges on the machine. I have been able to install other packages without issue.

There is nothing that I see in Console that indicates the cause of the issue.

The thread "Installing VirtualBox on El Capitan" (I can't post URLs) is an apparently different issue, and does not indicate a solution.

Any suggestions?

P.S. Great to see that USB 3.0 is finally supported!

Unfortunately, it looks like the VirtualBox 5.0.16-105871 installer violates the El Capitan System Integrity Protection (SIP).

If you understand the implications of disabling SIP, you can search on:

How do I disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) AKA “rootless” on OS X 10.11, El Capitan?

and/or

System Integrity Protection – Adding another layer to Apple’s security model

to find out how to disable and re-enable SIP.

(My apologies, I can't post links yet.)

There is something unusual with your host. SIP does not prevent VirtualBox from installing. There are several gaps in your conclusion:
  • You're the only one that's reporting this.
  • There are no evidence that you presented that proves otherwise.
  • People have been installing VirtualBox on 10.11.x by the masses. Including myself 10 minutes ago.
Here's what you need to do if you want to provide some credibility to your report:

Once you start the installer package, press Cmd-L to show the installer log. Choose to "Show All Logs" from the detail level drop-down list. If you miss it, open the Console.app and take a look at the installer log there. If you don't see the log list, choose to show it. On the left hand side choose the "/var/log/install.log".

If you don't figure out yourself what's the problem, post the log as a zipped attachment. Please do not post all of your install.log. Just the relevant pieces. Watch the time that you start the installation and the time you end it. Copy-Paste this part into a new document, zip it and attach that. It should start with something like:
Apr 8 11:37:32 VB-OSX-1011 Installer[748]: LSExceptions [0x7fb229d27080] loaded
Apr 8 11:37:32 VB-OSX-1011 Installer[748]: @(#)PROGRAM:Install PROJECT:Install-1000
Apr 8 11:37:32 VB-OSX-1011 Installer[748]: @(#)PROGRAM:Installer PROJECT:Installer-853
Apr 8 11:37:32 VB-OSX-1011 Installer[748]: Hardware: MacBookPro8,3 @ 2.30 GHz (x 2), 3072 MB RAM
Apr 8 11:37:32 VB-OSX-1011 Installer[748]: Running OS Build: Mac OS X 10.11.4 (15E65)
Finally, and this is the crucial part, I want you to think hard, very hard, and report any modifications you've done to your system, no matter if you think they're small or big. For example, Macports, Wine, python, etc. Your system is not a plain vanilla system. The more clues you get, the easier is going to be to spot the source of the error.

Unfortunately, the installer package would not even start, so that there is no ability to capture logs from the running installer. As I previously mentioned, there is no evidence of anything unusual in any of the system logs, either by name of process or by timestamp.

I definitely appreciate finding out how to enable verbose logging in the installer.

If I can replicate this on another machine or another install on the same machine, I certainly will see if there is any other evidence.

Would you mind backing that statement up? I.e. post the logs as instructed in my previous response.

If you want to keep discarding logs as "I don't see anything funky", well, you're right. I don't see anything funky either. In fact I don't see anything at all...

I can verify this. Under 10.11.4, when double-clicking the package file, a dialog comes up stating "Verifying "VirtualBox.pkg"...". There is a blank progress bar that never makes any progress. The only thing you can do is close it. The installer never opens.

When I double click the package, Console says this:

4/11/16 2:31:34.154 PM CoreServicesUIAgent[26897]: Error -60005 creating authorization

When I dismiss the dialog, Console says this:

4/11/16 2:31:44.720 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.xpc.launchd.oneshot.0x10000048.Installer[29788]) Service exited due to signal: Killed: 9

Monkeying with control-click opens of the package doesn't help. I think the package is damaged. The dmg is: VirtualBox-5.0.16-105871-OSX.dmg

EDIT: Thought I would add this for those of you on deadlines. You can get the software installed by logging out (under the Apple menu), logging in as root, and running the installer there. Smoke testing shows that it runs fine. I haven't done much else with it yet.

Oh -and the package is not damaged obviously, since it does work this way. Google isn't shedding any light on what the cause might be either.

@Jeffsf and Mystigo
Socratis is correct that SIP has nothing to do with your issues first of all. I already had VB 5.0.16 installed in El Capitan 10.11.3 but just to double check since I had updated to 10.11.4, I uninstalled VB then re-downloaded VB 5.0.16 and installed without any problem.

Whatever is going on with your systems it has nothing to do with VirtualBox or El Capitan. The most likely reason is some application you are running on your Macs that is interfering with the install. Try installing in Safe Mode.

@Mystigo
Please read the thread again. From the very beginning. Especially the part about having modified your host in unknown ways.

I have a 10.11.4 VM. Plain vanilla. Nothing messes up the basic installation. Now, on this VM, VirtualBox-5.0.16-105871-OSX.dmg installs fine. So, with my little brain, I'm inclined to point that something is wrong with your setup/host.

PS: After a new fresh install on 10.10.4, I upgraded. And, I just finished an install on 10.11.5b (15F18b) with no problems. YMMV...

PS2: The settings on the "Security and Firewall" are still set to the defaults of only allowing signed apps to be installed.

I had the same problem (also on Mac OS 10.11.4).
defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages skip-verify true solved it for me.

WHAT?????
This is a really dangerous advice. The command that you posted practically disables all checksum checks that are built-in the DMG algorithm. You cannot ensure that your download is not corrupt. Do not do that.

If you have a headache you do not cut your head off. It usually doesn't work...

Also had the problem on 10.11.4. After mounting the package, was able to install it via:

Code: Select all

sudo installer -package /Volumes/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.pkg -target /

I can confirm the same issue on 10.11.4. Nothing special / funny about my host or permissions.

OK... I'll bite...

Do myself (and yourself) a favor. Buy a new hard drive. Install OSX 10.11. Update. Fully. Do not install anything. If you see any problems installing VirtualBox, I will reimburse you for the hard drive and the time lost.

If not, re-read the thread. Follow the advice given. Post evidence. Post the logs. "Me too" does not help anyone identify and potentially solve a problem...

Oh, and BTW, please, all of you, stop reading irrelevant blogs. Most of the time these guys fulfill the infinite monkey theorem.

And finally, in case you missed the sticky (how could you), here's some advice from klaus:
REMINDER: provide facts and information

Lately there is an increase of extremely vague posts which don't contain the bare minimum information to reply anything sensible. Keep in mind that this results in your post being ignored, which is the opposite of what you want. So provide as much detail as you can, please, as this will ensure you get a good and fast answer.

This is essentially just a repeat of the Forum Posting Guide, which to a large extent is just written down common sense.

Fixed with a reboot

I am experiencing the same issue with VirtualBox-5.0.18-106667-OSX.dmg

In the console window I see the following errors:
