Sleep kernel panics on 10.11.4 Beta

Post by ggascoigne »

This is very reproducible, if my laptop goes to sleep while I have VMs active, it will panic. This is using Virtual Box Version 5.0.14 r105127, and build 15E33e of OSX 10.11.4 Beta. Sadly, both the virtual box upgrade and the OSX beta upgrade happened so close together that I don't have a good picture of which upgrade triggered this.

The crash log is:

So what does that mean precisely? Panic when the system is going to sleep? Panic when the system is waking up? Sometimes one and sometimes the other?

I can't reproduce this panic attack on my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015).

FWIW, tested an Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS guest and a Windows 10 guest.

I'm not actually sure. I think that it's as it wakes up since I see the grey screen of death sometimes. I'll try some different scenarios a bit later this morning when I get a break. I was hoping that the stack might have given a clue, but I'll admit I didn't look at it too hard.

Please post the VM log file for your guest when it shut down normally. With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" to a zip, and attach the zip here.

This appears to panic on wake up.

It also appears to only happen (or at least happen reliably) when running a Windows VM (win7 in this case). I've tried with a Centos 6.7 VM and it appears to wake up just fine, though I'll admit that this is a far from exhaustive test. I've definitely been running Windows VMs most often recently. Note that I almost never actually login to the GUI on these boxes, I've got ssh installed on them all and am automating everything through Vagrant.

Also, I have an external display, and on at least two occasions, the system looked like it was coming back up, paused after my laptop display was looking correct and then crashed. Not sure how relevant this is, but it seemed odd.

Ahem, I said Shutdown not Saved State. But that's okay. The thing is, We don't support Vagrant but someone may have an idea. I can say it's probably why I can't get my guests to panic. I don't use Vagrant.

Sorry, that's the state that the VM was in after the box recovered.

I can start it without vagrant and see if it does the same thing and then re-start it and save it if that'll help.

You may want to check if it crashes without Vagrant.

Right now I can't reproduce the panic.

I started that same VM in normal mode from the UI, suspended the laptop, woke it up, everything was fine. Did the same with headless mode, again, fine.

Then I tried what was breaking with Vagrant and now it's working just fine. I'll have to run things for a while longer but right now I'm rather puzzled. VM's that I've only ever run from Vagrant, that used to cause this crash, suddenly no longer cause it to crash, even though I've not changed anything about those VMs. I'll re-create them (since after all, that's the point of Vagrant) and see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like a plan. Just so you know, posting anything about OSX betas violates your Beta user agreement.

Thanks, I rather hoped that since this was (at least as far as I could tell) nothing to do with the Beta, that that wouldn't be a problem. Guess I should check the fine print.

It probably doesn't but you aren't supposed to post anything about the betas, or mention them, or even think about them.
