USB support in Open Source Edition

Post by justyn »

Hi,

The Wikipedia page on VirtualBox has a sentence added in May 2008 that says "USB support is slated to be open-sourced in a later version of VirtualBox". It lacks any citation or clue where it came from.

Has anything actually been said on this topic? I'd be very interested in hearing from someone at Innotek or Sun.

I know I'm not alone in being very excited by the prospect of being able to use the wonderful open source edition, package-managed, updated and supported in my favorite distro, with USB devices.

As far as I've heard from the devs, there is no confirmation about this. It's possible that it was a statement when they first introduced USB support, but came back from it and kept it closed source.

Because there has been no word from anyone officially (or even unofficially) the sentence

"USB support is slated to be open-sourced in a later version of VirtualBox"

has been removed from the VirtualBox Wikipedia article.

It would still be nice to get some kind of clarification of this issue.

The bad thing is that USB seems to have some serious issues (crash, hang) - the good thing - at a first look it is in 2.0.0 open source!

Could you say where you have seen this please?

I can see no mention of USB support in VirtualBox 2.0.x Open Source Edition.

Is it possible for someone from Innotek/Sun to clarify their stance on this?
