winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
Hello ,
I'm running windows vista 64bit host (4Go RAM)
and on my guest i run : winXP pro 32bit
I realized (after hours of tests) that ...
If you install Avast 4 Home edition on your winXp guest it will freeze your network both on your guest and host machine.
The only solution i found was to stop/uninstall Avast ...
AVG free antivirus seems to not cause this problem ...

Do you have any log entries in the event viewer to support this theory? Is it reproducable all the time? If so, I will add it to the FAQ.

I had this problem each time i create a VM with winXP and i installed Avast Home on it , since i remove it , no more problems.
here is the only thing i found in the event viewer of the host :
Which came out , when i tried to browse internet with my host trying to find a solution (it was impossible).
Event ID : 8003

That entry is a normal entry, everyone has it when there are more than one MS machine connected to the network.
I'll add this program to the 'internet block programs' list. With a small note.

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
Get Avast run on the background? Avast allways run on the background as resident. If you can set scheduled scan, this option has been only in Avast Professional (in Advanced view - Tasks, i think). In Avast Home you can only manual schedule scan on next system boot.
Better alternative besides AVG (i personnaly do not recomended AVG) is only Avast and sure NOD32 (best, but commercial only).
Apropo, log entries in Event viewer is under "Antivirus", not "System" or "Applications" (but here is maybe exist entries, when antivirus completely crash down).
Sure, i have Windows XP Pro host system (on my notebook) and two Windows XP Pro guest systems (one with IE6 and one with IE7 for testing purposes). In all these, Avast Home runs perfectly. In all cases i use Czech versions (OS, Avast, etc.), but here is not differences, as far as i know.
As post sfchun, problems with network on guest systems with Windows XP maybe relevant to select correct type network adapter. In my configuration i use NAT, then i select "Intel PRO/1000 T Server (NAT)" adapter and this works perfectly for me.

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
The fact that Avast doesn't work properly with VB means it's not a good antivirus program . There are other free antivirus that work just fine with it, like AVG and Comodo.

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
I cannot more discuss here about antivirus software. At first it is off-topic and at second i cannot recomend AVG, because slow down system performance more than other .
I can only confirm, that Avast DOES work with VB . As i wrote before, i have it on host and on guests too. And in addition on Mandriva Linux guest too. It is the fact. Then error is maybe on another side, than on antivirus. As i wrote before too, maybe it is in configuration of network adapter in VB. Or maybe it is elsewhere, i don't know at this time.
OK, i can close this discussion, because sfchun cannot respond about more than one year ago - sorry, i glance over sfchum's last post date - then we cannot verify, that sfchun solved his problem or not.

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
Compatibility is all about how it plays with other apps, settings and development. It's perfectly possible that current versions are capable of working alongside of VB.
AVG slowing down a system, that's something new for me. As long as it doesn't do it's daily full system scan that's enabled by default, you won't even know it's there.
If it's a combination of the program and VB, it's not off-topic. I skimmed through the last two posts, maybe it was still on-topic.maverick_cz wrote:I cannot more discuss here about antivirus software. Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
OK, i understand. Then i confirm again, that combination Windows XP as guest OS and any common antivirus (NOD32, Avast, AVG and more) WORK correctly under VB. Sure, any exceptions are possible.Sasquatch wrote:If it's a combination of the program and VB, it's not off-topic. I skimmed through the last two posts, maybe it was still on-topic.
Small notice about AVG performance (sorry, this is off-topic, but to explanation): It's about antivirus core, that in AVG is more robust (big, heavy) than in other AV like Avast and NOD32. Sure, this is very noticeable by users in scheduled full system scan, but sometime in normal work too - scan on accesing files (open, save), internet communication, etc. It is know thing since AVG (i think from version 7.0) go into Windows 9x, XP, etc. In my country almost any people swear to AVG and recomended Avast or better NOD32 (even if it's not free for home users).

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
Weird. Never had issues with AVG. It was a lot faster than Norton (anything is ). Boot, login, internet, everything was still fast on my XP system (rarely boot into XP, last time was a few months ago).

Re: winXp gues and Avast Home = network stop
Oh sure, Norton. Norton is snail between antiviruses. Throw it away. As i work as IT admin more time, then i install and test more antiviruses. Then i stay on NOD32 for company and Avast for personal. It is my recomendations only, but other people cannot agree with me.
