Not able to run GUI on RHEL 4 ES
Not able to run GUI on RHEL 4 ES
Does anyone have a clue why Virtual Box is not letting me startx my RHEL box? I'm running version 4 (ES) of Red Hat, and while the system was loaded with all the "Addons" for a Linux guest, I am not able to run "startx" to initiate the GUI. It looks like there are issues with the mouse. Ironically, Windows guests work flawlessly...

Also, is it really necessary to make it a poll when you ask a question? Unless you have a very good reason, I will remove the poll as it doesn't make sense.

Sasquatch,
The poll makes sense, being that installing Windows guest systems is easier in my short experience with vritualbox than installing them on Linux or Solaris.
Are you willing to help, or simply criticize my poll? I don't know what do you mean by "conform to forum posting guide".
The virtual box is running on Solaris 10 05/08 x64, 1 AMD Opteron CPU, and 1GB of Ram. Running Virtualbox 1.6.4.

Just read the Forum Posting Guide and give us more info as to what doesn't work, what errors, what settings, etc.
The question about your poll is that you are having problems with Xserver on your RHEL guest, does that have anything to do with installing a specific Guest? If you look more closely here on the forums, you see that there are all kinds of issues and successes with all kinds of Guest systems. This poll here will not be represenative, as only people with Linux Guests will view this topic. If you only have Windows or Solaris Guests, would you bother to read this part of the forum?

And what is the content of the xorg.0.log file? From what I can tell now, there is an error in your xorg.conf file. I don't know the command to reconfigure your xorg.conf file on RH, but on Ubuntu it's as follows.
Could be that it's the same, but I doubt it. Check your distro's documentation for the correct command. It seems that it wants to use a serial mouse, which you don't have and VB does not support.
Code: Select all
dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg

This is the problem, no mouse configured:
You need to specify a mouse. Usually, this should happen automatically, but it didn't. See if you can find a default mouse configuration, there are plenty if you use Google. I can't give you mine, because I have no GUI running on my Linux VM (Ubuntu Server) and the one for my Laptop won't work, because it's a touchpad.(WW) <default pointer>: No Device specified, looking for one...

Great, now I will remove your 'poll', as it really isn't needed . You can start one in a more general part of the forum, "Using VB", if you want to start one and get more response.

Then recreate it in the more appropriate place. This is not the correct place for it. People with only Windows and/or Solaris Guests will not read it here.
