VirtualBox 4.3.28 completely hosed for me

Post by CaptSaltyJack »

For some reason, VB is extremely unhappy on several fronts:

- Virtual machines are giving errors, something about "service main loop failed."
- Settings dialog box is completely blank (see image below).
- Can't install guest additions, it says it's missing, tries to download it, then the download fails, saying the file can't be found.

I already did a complete uninstallation (removed the app and all related files), and reinstalled. It still is acting very poorly. Anyone have any ideas?

It's worse than that. The entire app is just broken. The about dialog says I'm running version "r0". That's it. Also, the notifications at the top that say things like "you have auto capture" never go away forever. If I click "don't show again," they still come back next session.

Something is very very wrong.

I should also mention that when I first load up VBox, it's completely fine. Once I boot up a VM, that's when things go haywire (version is r0, settings dialog is blank, errors everywhere, etc)

One thing I would do is run Disk Utility > Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. There's no reason VirtualBox would go haywire for no reason.

Just did repair permissions. Still hosed. Can someone tell me a complete list of all files related to VirtualBox, so I can do a clean wipe and reinstall it? This is what I've got:

/Applications/VirtualBox.app
~/Library/Preferences/org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBoxVM.plist
~/Library/Preferences/org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox.plist
/Library/Application Support/VirtualBox/
~/Library/Saved Application State/org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox.savedState/
~/Library/VirtualBox/

Why? There's an uninstall tool that comes in the VB dmg that you downloaded that will remove everything except any VMs that you may have created.

Oh damn! Thanks for the reminder. I'll try that, then reinstall.

No go. Before even adding my VMs back, I tried adding a new one, and I got this:

I completely uninstalled VirtualBox. What in the world could be causing this?!

When I try to add an existing Linux vbox and boot it, it boots but I see this in the log:

VBoxSVC is crashing. Here's a crash log. (edit: or not, it won't let me attach crash files)

FWIW, when you manually did this…
I already did a complete uninstallation (removed the app and all related files), and reinstalled. It still is acting very poorly. Anyone have any ideas?
you could have deleted critical files that destroyed the structure of the install along with needed info for the guests. If you didn't use snapshots, you might be able to reconstruct the guests. Otherwise you may have to start from scratch. No Time Machine backups?

But even after a complete uninstall of VirtualBox and reinstall, and trying to add a new guest OS from scratch, it still doesn't work. So even if I had removed something VBox needed, the reinstall should've taken care of that.

I'm going to submit an official bug report. Thanks for your help!

Maybe. What I'm saying is, I've done a complete uninstall of VirtualBox and all related files. If, after reinstalling it fresh, I can't even add a new guest, then that's a bug. Not sure how I can be more clear.
