Trunk linux guest addons issue

Post by Menion »

Hi all
I've just compiled the Virtualbox trunk to generate Linux amd64 guest addons, in order to try to solve an issue with 3D acceleration of Linux guest O.S on a Windows host running Intel HD graphic car and last drivers
Everything went smoothly, however the guest addons installation fails:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.3.53_OSE Guest Additions for Linux 100%
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 4.3.53_OSE of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ]
Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules [ OK ]
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules [ OK ]
Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions [ OK ]
Starting the VirtualBox Guest Additions [FAILED]
(modprobe vboxguest failed)

Installing the Window System drivers
Installing X . Org Server 1.14 modules [ OK ]
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions [ OK ]
You may need to restart the the Window System (or just restart the guest system)
to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services componen[ OK ]
from dmesg the problem is
[ 636.515981] vboxguest: Unknown symbol VBoxGuest_RTStrCopyEx (err 0)
depmod is run, it should not be a mod dependency issue, since vboxguest.ko is the root module, right?
Any help to solve this issue?
Bye

What exactly is the guest?

I first saw this issue yesterday on a Ubuntu 15.04 guest and have not been able to track it down just yet, but suspect new host code that they have not ported to the guest additions just yet.

Moving to OSE.

Thanks,

I have reported this to the DEVs so they can see what the issue is. I do know the problem started after SVN r53112 release date ( 10/21/2014 )

Hi
Thank you, now the modules can load fine.
However the issue is not resolved.
I have Fedora 19, if I enable the 3D acceleration, the gnome session crash just right after the login (also the gnome classic). It pop up with a screen "Oh, no, something has gone wrong!" and come back to the login.
This has happened after having updated the Intel HD graphic drivers to the last version (required to solve an issue with MS Office 2013 and Windows 7even)
My host is 7even 64 bit professional
I've tried to check in the log for some info, but they look more or less clear
This is the gdm log:

Re: Trunk linux guest addons issue

Post by Perryg »

I would say that the guest additions you have just built will not have a chance of fixing your issues unless you also install the host code. SVN is the next new "feature" major build and not surprisingly usually don't work properly with current release builds.

I would actually try version 4.3.12 and its associated guest additions & extension pack to resolve issues with Fedora 19 especially on a Windows host.
