Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Win8.1 64bit guest on Mac OS Mavericks. Tried 32 bit guest also.
Virtualbox 4.3.8.
Guest additions crashes during installation of graphics driver IF 3d acceleration is unticked in virtualbox. (Unticking it in guest additions installer is impossible).
Happens for anyone else?

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Had the same problem. Solved by enabling 3d acceleration in the settings for the guest.
I think the problem is that on Win 8.1 the guest additions installs the 3d graphics driver, and when the option is disabled it results in a crash.
Since Win 8.1 relies heavily on 3d effects, I think both options is a must…

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Same problem here. Unfortunately my entire VM is very unstable when running with 3d acceleration enabled, so this is pretty much a show-stopper for me. Currently running with Guest Additions 4.3.6 as a workaround.

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
How did you rollback your guest additions version? Did you have to roll back the entire application or just the extensions?
I reinstalled 4.3.6 extensions and I got prompted about the downgrade and can see them on the preferences menu but in the guest, it's still trying to install 4.3.8 for some reason.
Thanks.
Keith

Same problem here. 3D flickers badly. Uninstalled 4.3.8, reinstalled 4.3.6...

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Re going back to earlier version of Guest Additions, I fortunately had a snapshot of the VM taken before the upgrade to 4.3.8.
Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
OK Had the same problem:
Host: Win 7 x64
Guest Win 8.1 x64
VBox 4.3.6
Both up to date, Win 8.1 worked OK since pre betas.... Installed 4.3.8 VBox, all other Oses, including Win2000, XP, about 10 linux distros both x86 and amd64 from fedora to ubuntu, mint, etc, work OK under 1.3.8 with the 4.3.8 additions.
Tried to install 4.3.8 additions in win 8.1. CRASHED DURING INSTALL, had no snapshot (stupid) so had to start in safe mode (F8 equivalent), uninstalled Guest additions, downloaded a 4.3.6 additions iso , installed, EVERYTHING OK.
There is some SERIOUS BUG in 4.3.8 additions for win 8.1
Will try the 3D option you guys mention. Fist a snapshot.

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Enabling 3D in Win 8.1 causes the same problem than in Mint 16 Cinnamon: The mini toolbar (wich I use on upper screen border) leaves a square black rectangle of its same size when it auto hides, in that portion looks like screen does not refresh.
Will leave Win 8.1 with 4.3.6 additions till a bugfix comes out or a new (less buggy) version comes out

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
I have/had the same problems you guys are facing.
One work around is to enable 3D acceleration in the settings for the guest as suggested, then install the 4.3.8 Guest addition and afterwards disable the 3D acceleration again.
This allowed me to install the latest Guest Addition and resolved the issues that having 3D enabled causes.

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
I tried this workaround without success. The VM crashes badly when starting up after disabling 3D again; the Windows repair process starts but doesn't achieve anything.J-C.Martin wrote:I have/had the same problems you guys are facing.

What does seem to work is this: temporarily enable 3D, install the 4.3.8 Guest Additions, roll back the display driver to 4.3.6 in Device Manager, shut down and disable 3D. This way you get the parts of 4.3.8 Guest Additions that work OK.
Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
I am experiencing the same problem.
Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Guest: Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64 Evaluation
Guest has 3D acceleration disabled.
Guest was running fine in VirtualBox 4.3.6 with Guest Additions 4.3.6. Updated to VirtualBox 4.3.8. Ever since I updated Guest Additions to 4.3.8, the guest crashes on boot. Resolved by using System Restore to roll back the guest to Guest Additions 4.3.6.

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Same problem. Unfortunately I installed Win8.0 then upgraded to Win8.1 straight away, then installed guest additions without a snapshot. I wasn't sure what the problem was, went right back to the beginning and took snapshots at every step. The last step was to install Guest Additions onto 8.1, the reboot hung up and I couldn't move on from there.
Host: Win 7 Pro 64 bit
Guest: Win 8.1 Pro 64 Bit. allocated 4Gb RAM and 4 cpu's
VB: 4.3.10r93012
Guest Additions: 4.3.10
After reading this thread I grabbed the guest additions iso for 4.3.6 and tried installing that. Similar effect, this time a spontaneous reboot during the install.
I read on another thread that this problem is meant to be fixed in 4.3.10 but I dont think it is.
I read discussions about the setting of 3D acceleration, so I tried turning this off, but left 2D on. This time the install worked. I was able to reboot successfully, and so far everything seems OK. I turned 3D back on, and the VM hung up when tried to start IE, although it did boot successfully. So I turned it off again. I don't know what limitations this will impose on the use of the system, but I'll leave it off and see how it goes.
For the record I've also got PAE/NX turned on, I've seen that discussed as a possible issue. I didn't try playing with it since 2D off seemed to do the trick.
Thanks
Malcolm

Re: Win 8.1: Guest addition crashes during install
Now Working with 4.3.10.
Before: VBox 4.3.8 Win7x64 ultimate host, Win 8.1.1 guest wint 4.3.6 additions.
1- Took a snapshot
2- Uninstalled ALL VBox additions
3- Removed from device manager residual video adapter driver, DELETING all files
4- Rebooted.
5- Took another snapshot
6- ENABLED 3D
7- Booted to 1024x768 no guests. INSTALLED GUEST 4.3.10
8- Rebooted, NO crash, it is WORKING.
STILL HAVE THE DAMM BLACK RECTANGLE that does NOT refresh when the mini toolbar hides. This happens on Guests: Win 8.1, Mint 16 with Cinammon, Fedora with Gnome 3, and some others. THAT IS A BUG, an old one
