No, it's a multiple VCPU VM at that point. Yesterday when I set the processor count to 1 I ran all day without any problems. When skoehler said he didn't have problems after turning 2D off I wanted to try that so I set the processor count to 2 or 4 (don't remember which) and turned off 2D accel. I still triggered the problem.

Unfortunately this is apparently getting worse. I just ran two Virtualbox VMs, both with 4 VCPUs, and got another hard crash. No VMWare involved in that crash at all.

Also, even though we've run VBoxManage setproperty hwvirtexclusive off, for BOTH of the VMs (but only running 1 at a time!) if I hang over the "V" icon in the bottom right corner I see the following:

VT-x/AMD-V: Enabled
Nested Paging: Enabled
Unrestricted Execution: Enabled
Execution Cap: 100%
Processor(s): 4

So, we have hwvirtexclusive off, 2D disabled, 3D disabled, VMWare not operating, multiple VCPUs on both machines and I still gets a crash.

I guess I'll try 1 VCPU on each machine and see if 4.3 can even to VMs on my box. If you have other things you want me to try please let me know.

Again, NONE of this seems necessary on 4.2.18.

Thanks,
Mark

Yet another hard crash. This time only 1 VM was being used. The VM had been up for hours, single VCPU, kernel is now 3.10.17, VBox-4.3, and the machine just completely hung. No way out except for a hard reset.

I'm going to drop back to vbox-4.2.18 again, along with gentoo-sources-3.10.15 and see how that goes. I ran that combination successfully for weeks and haven't had any machine problems at all in a long, long time. I want to try to ensure that it's not an issue with the box itself but really is either Virtualbox-4.3 or possibly a 3.10.16 kernel regression of some type.

Most recent log file from the crash is attached.

Also, all this messing around caused Windows to think the machine had changed and required a revalidation of the license. Not a big deal but it takes 10-15 minutes on the phone to get through that mess so I don't want this to happen too often.

Cheers

I can confirm this issue.
I have only one VM - Windows 7 64-bit. Host is openSUSE linux with 3.8.6 kernel. I had no problem with vbox-4.2. But with 4.3 i had several hard crashes/freezes since I upgraded. There was nothing in either /var/log/messages or vbox logs - entire computer just freezed. On guest I am running Visual Studio 2012.

I attached vbox log.

Same here. Opensuse 12.3 for x86_64, with stock kernel-desktop-3.7.10-1.16.1.x86_64 kernel, and a windows 7 sp1 64-bit guest. No problems prior to the upgrade to 4.3.

I've made some fixes to the VT-x hypervisor code and will upload a test build soon. Not yet sure if it solves this particular problem.

Please post a link with instructions how to install. I'm on Gentoo and this is normally done using emerge so I don't have direct experience with other methods of installing VB.

Thanks,

The Gentoo philosophy is to build everything from source. I'm providing the .run binary package (although the kernel modules will be compiled from source during the install). Since I don't use Gentoo, I would expect a Gentoo user would know what they're doing with their system. I guess if you want to do it the 100% Gentoo way you'll compile your own VirtualBox? Anyway, that's something you should ask the Gentoo gurus.

You can install the provided ".run" file by executing it (chmod +x the file if it doesn't have execute permission bit set, it should). Most of the program files should get installed under /opt/VirtualBox.

Coming from an Arch Linux stock kernel, several times a day the latest virtualbox 4.3.0 crashes severely and freezes the whole system.

OK. Gave it a shot. The install went fine but the program didn't run. Screenshot attached. Note that I tried to run it as normal from the VB icon in KDE.

As it appears at this time that you have LOTS of people with crashes I'll hope that one of them can try your install and make forward progress.

- Mark

There's a Gentoo ebuild for installing Oracle binaries: app-emulation/virtualbox-bin. It should be easy to adjust the ebuild so that it uses the file provided by Ramshankar.
