Server2012 R2/Windows 8.1install fails:Error Code 0x000000C4

Post by birdie »

I've created a bug report for this issue, but if anyone knows what settings I might have overlooked, suggestions are welcome. I've tried everything I could to no avail.

I have an i686 Linux host (I've also tested in Windows 8 64 host).

Code: Select all

Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.
Error code: 0x000000C4
Parameters:
The error message itself is kinda ridiculous - the power button will shut my PC down completely.

According to Microsoft's Windows Server 2012 R2 requirements my VM is fully compatible with this Windows.

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

This is the most useless thing I could do since this bug is 100% reproducible and there are already similar posts in this forum, but if you insist here it is.

Few things :
Windows 2012 R2 is not supported yet - 2012 either for the matter, see Supported Guest OS
00:00:00.463486 File system of '/tmp/Windows Server 2012 64.vdi' is tmpfs
A bit of a weird place for a VDI file, don't you think? What about trying from a regular disk instead?

I for one need this information to proceed. However since it is as you say useless I guess I can forget trying to see what your issue is.
Be sure to let me know when it becomes useful so I can continue trying to help you as I don't seem to be having an issue myself.

It's not even allocated, so what can be wrong? My /tmp has over 12GB of space available which was more than enough for Windows 8.1 installation.

Besides if I remember correctly basic Windows 2012 server installation requires less space than Windows 8(.1).

Not really, it just strikes me as odd that one would ask for help and then criticise the person that was trying help. You see no one here has to help you. This is after all an end user forum where others that have knowledge try to help those that don't, or are having issues. I believe I may know what your issue is, but to proceed I need to ask questions and get real proper answers that are not tripe.

OK, let's get over it, I didn't want to mess with you or insult you anyway. I've been in the IT industry for over twenty years, so I'm still sure my VBox log makes no difference.

Anyways, if you have questions for me, please ask them.

Alright,

1) Have you been able to install and use Windows 2012 (not r2)
2) Can you verify that the other logs do not show a Guru Meditation 1155 (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT)?

Oh and just so you know, tickets posted at bugtracker that do not have the log files usually go for long periods before someone looks at them if they even do. The DEVs are somewhat adamant about having the logs so they can see what is going on, since they can not possibly tell what your issue may be without them.

I get the same error per the first post when I boot from a Windows 8.1 Preview ISO that I got from Technet. Does Vbox need an update for 8.1?

My work load is not where I can test Windows 8.1 preview just yet, but should be able to tomorrow or the next day.
But are you able to run windows 2012 (not r2)?

Windows 2012 runs just fine. It seems like Microsoft updated hardware requirements and VBox is missing something very important.

No errors whatsoever neither under Windows 8 64 host, nor under CentOS 6.4 host.

I've updated the bug report with logs and VM settings.

For 64-bit installations of Windows 8.1 Preview, your CPU must also support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW and LAHF/SAHF.
Hooray, I've found a solution!
