Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
Ubuntu 12.04 (long term release), & 12.10 (short term release) are already valid and 13.04 is due out this month.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I can confirm this. I restored a snapshot with 4.2.8 Guest Additions, shut down completely so it would be started from non-saved state, updated everything but new generic/pae kernel headers, reboot, and everything seems to works fine.mpack wrote:Can someone please test - or report explicitly - that Ubuntu guests are fine on v4.2.12 if an earlier guest additions is used? I.e. if you don't bother updating the GAs?
Then I update to current kernel headers. Prior to that upgrade, 3.2.0-29 was the oldest header version and likely what I ran DKMS and GA 4.2.8 off of (unsure).
3.2.0-38 was the latest header file I had before the upgrade.
After the upgrade, 3.2.0-40 is the latest kernel header and will not work with 4.2.12 guest additions.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
As was being dicussed at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55101 ...
The problem I have encountered for 4.2.12 & Xubuntu/Ubuntu:
Host: Windows 7 64bit
Guest: Xubuntu 12.04.2 32bit
Everything seems to work ok with a fresh install of guest Xubuntu 12.04.2 and GA 4.2.12.
After performing Xubuntu updates, the guest no longer boots to a graphical login (X fails to start).
As ruiner pointed out, it appears to be related to the kernel update.
For me, after updating the kernel packages from 3.2.0.37 -> 3.2.0.40, and re-configuring the GA, the
system fails to boot to a graphical login.
Looks like the error is caught (Oops) in kern.log and syslog:

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
Is there a bug tracker for this? (trac ticket?)
Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I have both Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and 32 bit as guests of Windows 7. The 4.2.12 GuestAddition installed and works on 64 bit. I only have the low graphics problem on the 32 bit Ubuntu. I ran the uninstall.sh and am able to get the VM up.mpack wrote:Yep, it's pretty clear by now that the problem has something to do with the interaction between an Ubuntu guest (maybe only Ubuntu 12.04), and the v4.2.12 GAs. AIUI, Ubuntu 12.04 is not actually released yet?
Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
One other piece of info: (unfortunately I don't have time yet to spend troubleshooting but I did a little to try to get things working):
Platform host: Windows 7 64 Pro
Guests: 1) Ubuntu 64 bit 12.04.2 up-to-date, 2) Centos 6.1 up to date
1) After installing a fully updated 4.2.12 on Win 7 and realizing that neither Ubuntu nor Centos were working without graphics problems, I did the following tests just in case it was a combination of kernel and the VB update:
test: I used grub to boot the last 4 kernels I've got in /boot, which are 3.2.0.37 -> 3.2.0.40, and all of them fail with the new additions. (Ubuntu).
test: Centos: The only thing I noticed was that the "$glxinfo | head" cmd no longer showed opengl being enabled, which is a problem for some things I do. I didn't play with kernels on that one.
Sorry, I've got no logs although I looked. I noticed X.*.error.log errors similar to those posted already. After reverting to 4.2.10 and redoing the guest addditions, I tried the same grub-4-kernel test and they all worked fine as before which is where I'm staying until a fix release comes along.
Regardings 'oops' in kernel logs on Ubuntu with Vbox, they are always there for me, but they don't keep anything from working that I've noticed. When everything looks fine, I can find at least one oops in the kernel log.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I see a similar issue with 64-bit CrunchBang 10. X-windows doesn't work after GA 4.2.12 is installed. This is a brand new VM, so I never had a chance to test GA 4.2.10 on it.
ADDENDUM: Here is the link to the issue tracker: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11709
PS: I have tried the GA 4.2.13 ISO given at the issue tracker. It worked for my Ubuntu VM. It didn't work for CrunchBang. Now I realize, though, that Debian and it's direct offshoots aren't necessarily supported by GA.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
It's not just the Linux guest additions that have display problems -- the "resize to window" functionality seems to be broken/intermittent for Windows guests. I've got OS X and Linux hosts (Slackware64-14.0) both upgraded to VBox 4.2.12, and my Win7 (x86) and Win8 (x86_64) guests don't resize correctly (*) when I maximize or switch them to full-screen. Downgrading the guests to the 4.2.10 guest additions restores the correct behavior. I have the WDM drivers installed in the Win7 guests. The problem persists whether 3d support is enable or not.
(*) Sometimes the guests do nothing, sometimes they change to a resolution that's bigger but not right (maximize vertically but not horizontally, for example), sometimes they change the internal guest resolution but don't display it, presenting a scroll-barred view within a padded border.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I get the Kernel Paging Request thing
on SuSE, 2.6.37, text mode.
After upgrading from VB 4.2.4.
With old guest additions.
But only with VT-x.
Compiling new additions doesn't help.
Can run with software virtualization.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I was also receiving the low-graphics mode error with my 4.2.12 guest additions installation.
Win 7 x64 host, Ubuntu 12.04 x86 guest
I was able to uninstall the 4.2.12 guest additions by running /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.2.12/uninstall.sh.
After rebooting, my guest OS started correctly without the guest additions installed.

@shrednwail: See the revised GAs ISO attached to the bug ticket (linked above).
For convenience, here it is again: VBoxGuestAdditions_4.2.13-85100.iso.

Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
This may seem like a really dumb question but since I've never had the "low graphics" mode problem on any guest should I bother with the 4.2.13 .iso? Does it fix the Windows 7/8 guest resize problem?

I don't know about Windows 7/8 guests, but I wouldn't fix something that isn't broken for you.loukingjr wrote:This may seem like a really dumb question but since I've never had the "low graphics" mode problem on any guest should I bother with the 4.2.13 .iso? Re: Discuss the 4.2.12 release
I only had a quick glance at the bugfix described in the ticket, ISTR the solution was to better identify the Linux version, hence no: I would not expect to get any benefit from installing it in a non-Linux guest. If you have no problem with the standard GAs then you should leave well alone until the next official release.
