The MD5 and SHA256 files are incomplete

The openSUSE, Fedora, and a few other download packages are not listed in the MD5 and SHA256 files.

Thanks, fixed. Updating a file on the download server takes always a bit longer. We usually start uploading the packages when the first packages are available and at this time, the MD5SUMs / SHA256SUMs of the other packages were not available yet.

Hello,
I have a problem with the new version:
Host: Mac OS X 10.8.3 mountain lion
Guest: Ubuntu 1204 LTS 32 bit

After an update from 4.2.10 to 4.2.12 I got at boot time under Ubuntu the message:
the system is running in low-graphics mode

That happened after installing the guest extensions and reboot.
I could not solve the problem under Ubuntu.

Switching back to virtualbox 4.2.10 solved the problem.

ACK, same happenings here. Had to revert the update, too.

Please post the guest log files as an attachment.
Without those nothing can be accomplished.

"low-graphics mode" problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS guests

Post by Gord »

I have encountered the VirtualBox 4.2.12 "The system is running in low-graphics mode" issue with Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS guests on two different Windows hosts now: 64-bit Vista, and 32-bit Windows_8.

The attached zip file contains two guest log files from the Windows_8 host:

- "before_12.log" is the guest log from the first boot after upgrading VirtualBox itself to 4.2.12. That is the session in which I upgraded the Guest Additions from 4.2.10 to 4.2.12.

- "after_12.log" is the guest log upon restarting the guest machine after upgrading the Guest Additions to 4.2.12. That is when I encounter the "low-graphics mode" issue.

The guest is Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS Desktop, fully patched (kernel 3.2.0-40-generic-pae).

If I can provide any other information that might be helpful, please just let me know.

I have the same problem with guest additions. Fist I installed 4.2.12 version software, and the virtual machine worked fine. An after that, I updated the guest additions. When I restarted the pc, it appeared the message of graphic low mode. Also, I lost two day trying to fix it.

"Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0:
if this server is no longer running, remove / tmp /.X0-lock
and start again

Hi, I have the problem described above, however, I don't understand how you guys fixed it! I have reverted back to 4.2.10 but the Ubuntu (12.04 LTS 32 bit) guest is completely unusable now (broken), I can't do anything... Using lower graphics settings does nothing, it's the same when I try to "exit to console", I just get a black screen in both cases. I can't install the guest additions, any help would be appreciated, otherwise I'm going to lose alot of work

Ok, I managed to install the 4.2.10 guest additions by booting into the Grub menu (holding down Shift when booting), from there I could get to the terminal and mount the guest additions cd...

For me, installing the 4.2.12 on an Ubuntu 12.4 system that has never had the additions before, and has not yet been patched (it seems over 500 updates were pending) worked. But upgrading an up-to-date system that already had 4.2.10 additions causes a black screen when upgrading to 4.2.12 additions. How do I get the guest logs?

Hi - For me, reverting wasn't difficult (which surprised me too): I went to the 'old vbox versions link' on the oracle site, then downloaded not only 4.2.10 but also 4.2.10 extensions and installed both of them after removing both of the old ones.

What made this 'easier' for me was that I'd made a snapshot right before I upgraded which I knew would only be of any use in case I had to go backwards to the last version and I used that snapshot after I reverted so that the guest software was the same as before 4.2.12 was installed.

Edit: I see you got it working. Good deal. Mine presents in the same way as above , slightly different. In my case, the resolution is close to normal (11xx X 9xx) but a '$glxinfo | head' claims GL isn't there which I'm working on a project and testing with so I rolled it back.

For info: My OS in this case is W7 Pro 64, and my guest is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 (.2 and up to date version). Also I have VM's for centos and mint neither of which worked correctly and I wasn't using OGL on those guests. They had res problems.

The 4.2.12 Guest additions work fine for me. Tested in Ubuntu and Xubuntu 12.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome 13.04. Mac host.

Were your 4.2.12 additions upgraded from 4.2.10 by any chance?

Devs probably need to be aware of this other thread which is going on. Ubuntu guest won't boot after update. I would copy the message here if it was a single message, but there's also a discussion.
Edit:  Actually, this seemed to develop into another variant of the Ubuntu GAs problem.
