eth3: Reset adapter

Post by Joakim Suarez »

Hi,

I'm using a vbox guest of Red hat linux and on a Ubuntu 12.04 host using NAT and now and then I get a "eth3: Reset adapter" in the system out and then network is screwed up and I need to reboot the guest.
Anyone know how to solve it?

Thanks,
Joakim

Sorry, here it comes below. Don't have the vbox log for when it happened. Will post when I get it again.
Though I do want to know it it's a known problem and what it could derive from.

Thx,
Joakim

Nothing particular in the log, so I guess the issue in the guest itself.

Post the following information.

ifconfig -a from the guest

From the hosts terminal type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Re: eth3: Reset adapter

First question I have is what happened to eth0 eth1 eth2 & eth3?
You say that eth3 is resetting but you are actually using eth4.

It may be due to failed tries to make it work but if that is the case you might need to reset the following:
  • edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules or you can delete the rules and Linux will configure it on the next boot
Be sure to back up the file first.

Hi,
It was eth3 from starters, at that time I used the guest in console mode (init 3) so then I saw the reset adapter error like from stderr/out.
After that I've now upgraded to Kernel 3.5:

joakim@joakim-ThinkPad-T430:~$ uname -a
Linux joakim-ThinkPad-T430 3.5.0-27-generic #46~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 26 19:33:21 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And only using it in graphical mode (init 5). When the error happened again I can not see the reset adapter, but the network icon got a red cross and needed to reboot.

After that I've now also upgraded to vbox 4.2.12 and at one point I got the red cross, but after a short while it repaired it selves??

Now I've removed the rules (which had all et0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 and rebooted and got only eth0 now.

Have any related being fixed in 4.2.12?

Best,
Joakim

Is it still resetting eth3?

Hi there,

I know this is an old topic but it shows up when you Google for the problem to I would like to share a possible solution.

I had the same problem (Network connection freezes, reset adapter error message) with a recent centos/7 Vagrant box v1710.01.

Some details about my host environment:
  • Fedora 26 (Desktop, KDE)
  • VirtualBox Version 5.2.0 r118431 (Qt5.9.2)
Changing the adapter type did not help in my case.

I finally solved it by not installing the VirtualBox Guest Additions.

I also updated a related bug report with my findings. See Ticket #15845, Comment: 4

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers,
Alex
