"VBOX CD-ROM ATA Device" guest driver is not working

Post by tvandor »

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded from version 2.2.4 to 3.0.6 and after the upgrade I discovered that I am not able
to mount CD-s anymore in the guest OS. Examining the problem I realized that my guest Vista system does not
recognize the virtualbox CD device anymore. I was able to upgrade the Guest Additions by transferring it
via shared folder but this did not fix the problem. After this I tried to uninstall the driver, then update it
but it was in vain. (Lastly I tried to remove everything form Host and Guest then reinstall, but unfortunately
this did not help either.)

In the device manager of the guest, the VBOX CD-ROM ATA Device is marked as non-working (little yellow
triangle with black exclamation mark in it) and in the properties I have following error description:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Do anybody have tip what to try to fix this?

(My host is a Windows XP SP3, my guest is Windows Vista SP2)

Thanks a lot,

Usually upgrading works fine but with version 2.x.x there was a problem (for some) that required a lot more work. See suggestion below and see if it helps.

Two things that you can do to see if you can get this installed/fixed:

1. Right click on the install program and then left click on run as admin.
or
2a If that fails you need to reinstall version 2.2.0 and select repair. (DO NOT reboot)
2b Run the version 2.2.0 install again and tell it to uninstall (DO NOT reboot)
2c Run the new Version 3.0.x install and see if it works (This time reboot)

Use you actual version of VBox that you upgraded from.

Hi Perryg,

I have tried to follow your procedure but I was still not able to make the CD driver work.
(I hope I did everything all right.)
Anyway, because of this, I have tried to hack the system: e.g. by removing all registry entries
of Virtualbox I could, deleting Vbox related stuff from the DriverStore.

Well, this was not a wise thing to do, because now my Display driver does not want to
install and the installation process halts and I am getting the following message:

So I think I #&@?! this up big time and decided to install Vista from scratch again
using version 3.0.6
I am keeping the old image for a few days so if you have a quick and dirty
solution for this, it is more than welcome. :-)

From the sounds of it you have trashed your guest. If it has data that you need you can attach it (the *.vdi) to the working guest as a second drive and retrieve data.

This might not have solved the OP's problem, but I landed on this with the same problem. The solution involved patching the registry:
