After several attemps (DVD, ISO, new media, SATA, IDE...) it seems to be not possible to install a M$ Windows Vista Sp1 (Ultimate 32 or 64bit) guest on a Windows 7 Prof. 64-bit host!? VirtualBox is v4.2.4, other guests (XP, Win7, Ubuntu) are running without any problems.
Installation stops every time while expanding files (step 2 of setup) at about 85%, pls see attached screenshot.
Any hints about this behaviour?
Thx...

Re: Unable to install Vista-Sp1-ultim-guest on Win7-host
Always post a VM log file (as a .zip attachment) when raising issues such as this. The VM log file is called "VBox.log" and can be found in the "Logs" subfolder of the VM folder. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, i.e. so the log file is closed, before collecting the file.

Thx for hint, corresponding log file is located http://on.yourweb.de/VBox.zip.

Re: Unable to install Vista-Sp1-ultim-guest on Win7-host
Ok, the important part seems to be this :-
First, I would run a full disk check on the host hard drive, since ISTM possible that a filesystem error caused the stall.
Also (and particularly if the above does not help), then you could try turning off the "Use host I/I cache" option in the storage settings.
This is only a fragment of a much longer sequence of those "AsyncCompletion" lines. I assume these are background writes to the virtual hdd, and I assume some problem has caused a long backlog.VBox.log wrote: 00:10:36.517864 AsyncCompletion: Task 0x000000d1db4640 completed after 16 seconds

Ok, i did check host drive, no errors.mpack wrote: This is only a fragment of a much longer sequence of those "AsyncCompletion" lines. I assume these are background writes to the virtual hdd, and I assume some problem has caused a long backlog.

New disc allocation for VM: No effect.
Turning off the "Use host I/O cache" option: No effect, log attached.

Two events are multiple stored in log:
AsyncCompletion: Task 0x000000d2537340 completed after 31 seconds

AHCI#0: Port 0 reset
Any further hint?
Thx...

Nope, if I had any further hints to give I would have mentioned them already. It looks like you'll have to raise a BugTracker ticket for this issue. BugTracker is a separate system, although you can use the same OSSO login you use here. On first login you'll be asked to choose a nickname for that site. It would make sense to use the same nickname as here, if it lets you.

I fount a solution für Vista64 Sp1-guest on Win7 64bit-host:
Don't use the SATA controller but the IDE one with ICH6 chipset and no Host I/O-Cache.
This settings let you install Vista64...

Well done, I'll try to remember your solution in the future.

Same behaviour with Win8prof-64bit guest, see this thread:

IDE installation works, SATA not.
