Try something like this:
C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>VBoxManage setextradata "Win8srv64" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32
Where Win8srv64 was the name you gave the VirtualBox Virtual Machine. (note case is important)
I did this with the VM powered off. After the change I booted VM and new resolution is in choices.
VirtualBox 4.1.20 running on Windows 7x64SP1
Worked with Win8x64 Server trial and Win8x32 Consumer Preview, haven't tried Win8x64 Consumer Preview yet...

I just spent in 4.1.2: no change !!!!
Same for me. I just installed v4.1.20 r80170 + appropriate extensions.
Result: still does not work
That's what I thought. Imagine the double-take I did when I got to the end of this article and read:
http://www.windows7hacker.com/index.php ... virtualbox
"After the installation is finished, switch to the desktop, and start installing the guest additions to get a better user experience. And not like early Developer Preview days, the guest additions get installed successfully and Windows 8 runs much smoothly with it."
Huh?

ChurdCFG wrote:I'm on a Mac OSX host, and actually boot my Virtualbox instance using my BootCamp partition (so I can boot directly or through VM to the same system). This works great with Windows 7, and also with Windows 8 before the GA install. The direct instance freezes right after I install the Guest additions, and it looks like Direct3d is the cause.
This is using VB 4.2.0 RC2 - a little out of the box I know, but it'd be nice to have it working like my Windows 7 did.
misha wrote:As for your 3D-on issue - please try the latest VBox 4.2 RC3, which contains a number of 3D-related fixes. If the problem still persists with it, please attach a VM log here so that we could figure out what the problem is.
