Windows 8?

I was able to get Guest Additions to work (partly) buy disabling 3D Acceleration and enabling 2D Acceleration. However, I'm still not able to use 16:9 resolutions and it crashes going in and out of full-screen mode.

I found the same thing. The video driver is not loading with error (code 37) in device manager, however, everything appears to be working and it's not slow or laggy.

Try something like this:

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>VBoxManage setextradata "Win8srv64" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32

Where Win8srv64 was the name you gave the VirtualBox Virtual Machine. (note case is important)

I did this with the VM powered off. After the change I booted VM and new resolution is in choices.

Worked with Win8x64 Server trial and Win8x32 Consumer Preview, haven't tried Win8x64 Consumer Preview yet...

You are the man! I have been struggling with finding a solution and this worked brilliantly. It took me a little time to work with VBoxManage. I had to go back to my DOS days to remember working with the command line but this is awesome. Thanks for sharing. Do a web search for VirtualBox and 1366x768 and you will know that there are a boatload of people that would love to have your solution.

Sorry that I don't have the time to plow through this entire topic... Just wanted to say how badly Windows 8 works on VirtualBox.

It installs and runs perfectly fine as far is the guest OS is concerned. But as some point it starts to show heavy artefacts. Whole areas of the screen go black until updated, some things go black&white even. What's worse, IE10 crashes like there's no tomorrow. More than once I've seen it get stuck in an endless crash-restart cycle, and even though Microsoft has made a complete and utter frakup of this OS, I can't believe that hard crashes on each and every website I visit got through the testing phase.

I suspect a driver malfunction, namely a driver provided by virtualbox. I don't know which one - I'm not a developer and I don't know where or how to find out.

The guest OS is Windows 7 x64 SP1. This is not limited to one physical pc - it happens on other systems (also with W7 x64 SP1, but completely differing otherwise) as well, so I don't expect any physical hardware to be a problem.

I am stunned by the problems people are having with Win 8 on VirtualBox 4.2 Beta1. I installed VB Beta1 with Guest Additions recommended by misha on my Win7 Pro 64 SP1 host. Then I installed Win8RP guest in VB. Everything works perfectly!

Is the trouble occurring with Win8 RTM?

For me, the trouble occurs (and has been occurring) with RTM, RP and CP. For the non-final versions, I was like "okay, it's still in beta", but now that it's gone RTM, I kind of expected things to work.

However, I haven't yet tried the latest VirtualBox beta version. I'm using the latest final/stable. I always say there's a reason why a beta is a beta, and that's why I usually refrain from using them

for those who have crashing issue on windows 8 rtm, you have to disable 3d acceleration in display > extended feature

Last year I have successfully installed and tried the Developer Preview in Virtualbox.

This week I wanted to install the RTM but all I’ve got is this message just after launching the machine for installation:
Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.

My Host is a Lenovo X61s (Core2Duo L7500) with latest BIOS running Vista.

What I’ve done so far:
- Use the lastest VirtualBox
- Tried all combination of PAE/NX, "VT-x" and "Nested Paging"
- Tried with or without the PCs BIOS setting (Security > Memory Protection > Execution Prevention > Enabled or Disabled)

I’ve googled an hour or so but nothing helps.

Anybody?

I have exactly the same issue that Urs wrote before. In addition to Urs combinations, I have tested to:
- "Turn on DEP for all programs and services" and check from windows that it's really enabled
- VirtualBox 4.2 Release Candidate 3

My host is Win7 64bit, powered by Intel E4400.

Are there any plans to allow Guest Additions installation without the Direct3D piece? The option's checked but grayed out when I try to do the install.

I'm on a Mac OSX host, and actually boot my Virtualbox instance using my BootCamp partition (so I can boot directly or through VM to the same system). This works great with Windows 7, and also with Windows 8 before the GA install. The direct instance freezes right after I install the Guest additions, and it looks like Direct3d is the cause.

This is using VB 4.2.0 RC2 - a little out of the box I know, but it'd be nice to have it working like my Windows 7 did.

The D3D support is integrated with VBox Guest Additions (WDDM) video driver required by Win8 (Win8 does not support old-style XPDM driver), and can not be installed separately.
BUT you can disable the 3D Acceleration in VM settings (on "Display" page in VM settings GUI) making it work as if 3D support is unavailable.
Note that starting 4.2 RC3 new Win8 VMs are created with 3D Acceleration off by default.

Thanks for the info on the driver - unfortunately, the error I'm talking about after installing the Additions happens in the direct bootcamp instance, not in Virtualbox (it completely freezes on direct boot). Not really Virtualbox's problem, so I'll most likely just suffer without the Additions when I use VB.
