Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
I've followed all of the procedures to actually create the server but having issues accessing and installing, configuring Ubuntu server.
My question how do I actually access server created through SSH and assign an IP, configuration, etc? I get is VRDE server is listening on port 3389, but that is it and can't go any further. port is open. How will this work if my actual physical server is at a colo data center? Is this possible over SSH? Or how can I access over the web if I haven't actually ran the install process of actually installing the server in virtualbox.
I've done this so far: I've use the example below.
VBoxManage createvm -name "Ubuntu 9.04 Server" -register
VBoxManage modifyvm "Ubuntu 9.04 Server" -memory "256MB" -acpi on -boot1 dvd -nic1 nat
VBoxManage createvdi -filename "Ubuntu_9_04_Server.vdi" -size 10000 -register
VBoxManage modifyvm "Ubuntu 9.04 Server" -hda "Ubuntu_9_04_Server.vdi"
VBoxManage registerimage dvd /home/ubuntu-9.04-server-i386.iso
VBoxManage modifyvm "Ubuntu 9.04 Server" -dvd /home/ubuntu-9.04-server-i386.iso

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
You access it by using the hosts IP and the port number you assigned to the guest.
Example 192.168.0.100:3389

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
I did that but it doesn't work, I get the error below. I just want to make sure, the IP is the IP I used to login and install virtualbox through SSH? I'm saying this because I don't know how to configure and assign an IP to that specific server I installed through virtualbox.
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
You don't. You probably can't use bridged mode as that would try to pickup an address from the provider and they more than likely will not allow it.
Set it to NAT
Code: Select all
NIC 1: MAC: 0800273257B0, Attachment: Bridged Interface 'eth0', Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: Am79C973, Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
PerryG, I'm sorry I'm new to all of this and trying to understand. Do I run that command and how do I set it to NAT? I appreciate you helping me out.

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
All of the VBoxManage commands are in the manual. Here is a link to the online version http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch08.html#idp13727168
Basically you would run VBoxManage modifyvm <vm name> --nic1 nat

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
You have a space in the name which means you need to wrap it in quotes " "

Ok..so now you'll think I'm an idiot, but that worked fine, what do I do next to install Ubuntu or access it?

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
From looking it should start up now. So just start it and watch for the listening on port 3389
Then you should be able to access it using the hosts IP and port.
Only thing that really concerns me is I see you storing the virtual HDD in root. This is probably not going to go well for you.

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
I went ahead and started it..
Got this through SSH:
VRDE server is listening on port 3389.
Went to the web browser and entered the IP I used to install virtualbox through SSH and still nothing. This is so confusing and reached a block. I'm not sure how differently I would install in another folder other than root.

Well you have to ssh to the ip and port and actually install the guest now.Went to the web browser and entered the IP I used to install virtualbox and still nothing. This is so confusing and reached a block. I'm not sure how differently I would install in another folder other than root.

Aren't these steps the same as the link you've just provided? If so, I've already created the server. Am I missing something?

Re: Accessing and Installing Ubuntu Server Software .iso
Did you read the instructions on the link I sent you?
Aren't you trying to actually install a guest? Read step 8.
In the future you really should not rely on other help guides as they tend to either mislead you or fail to provide accurate information.
