Re: Windows 8?
Please upload you machine definition. I cannot get Window 8 to get past the reboot that occurs after the initial install phase.christian1980 wrote:Latest version of Windows 8 runs fine on VirtualBox.
In fact if you install the Virtualbox Extensions Windows 8 will be very slow. Just uninstall them and it will be very fast and responsive even on a VM configured as a low end computer.
Re: Windows 8?
I'm having issues when i have GA installed (4.1.16). But that's a minor problem and i hope will be fixed for the next VBox version. But i have nother major issue, that my Windows 8 virtual machine stalls every time i try to connect my Microsoft Account. Anyone else seeing this? Same with both 32 and 64 bit Release Preview version and also with an older Consumer Preview 32-bit version. Can't really fully test Win8 features without logging in with MS Acc..
Re: Windows 8?
Running 4.1.16. Install win 8 release preview 64 bit. Installed Guest Extensions 64 bit.
The maximum res I can get is 1280x960?? Without GA is 1600x1200? Anyone managed to get 1080P with GA installed?

Windows 8 Reboot Hangs
VB 4.1.16
Host: 8GB RAM
Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 With All Patches
Created a Windows 8 32 bit and a Windows 8 64 bit machine.
Both CPU sections have:
- <CPU count="1" hotplug="false">
<HardwareVirtEx enabled="true" exclusive="false" />
<HardwareVirtExNestedPaging enabled="true" />
<HardwareVirtExVPID enabled="true" />
<PAE enabled="true" />
<HardwareVirtExLargePages enabled="true" />
<HardwareVirtForce enabled="false" />
</CPU>
Rest are defaults.
Tried installing both 32 bit and 64 bit. The CD boots and goes through the entire install process. Then it reboots the VM. The boot from CD countdown runs. It boots from the virtual drive and I get a black screen with Windows in big white letters. Nothing happens after that.
Both machine definitions and the x64 log are attached (three file limit).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Windows 8?
Same problem here. After installing the extensions, everything becomes slow and unresponsive (only if I'm using the new UI, if I switch to desktop it all goes back to normal).
The slowness I was able to solve: I increased the number of used cpus to 4 and the UI became responsive again. There's still the problem of the screen randomly flashing, especially when launching an app. It basically makes the virtual system unusable, unless I uninstall the extensions.

Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata "Windows 8" CustomVideoMode2 1920x1080x32
Re: Windows 8?
You can use the command line to add the resolution, but then you have to remove GA. is there a way to install GA but revert to normal vid driver?
Re: Windows 8?
I have installed guest additions and have interface delays on Windows 8 Release Preview. Unchecking "Enable 3D Acceleration" partially helps me. Delays are disappeared, but auto screen size does not work in this case. I think this is right behavior, because GA has only WDDM driver for Windows 8. Other GA features seem to be working (mouse integration etc.).
So, I'm waiting for next GA version.

Re: Windows 8?
Hmm some update from oracle today, wddm driver now working at 1080p, or decided to start working of its own accord. Still lots of Flickr using metro though. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Re: Windows 8?
Where do you see the update from Oracle? I'm looking at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads, and don't see anything new yet. Thanks for any info.
Re: Windows 8?
I just loaded it up and it then updated expansion pack. Not sure if this is what resolved the issue, but I couldn't get the wddm driver to work full screen before today.
