10.5.8 + 4.1.16 r78094 = out of memory?

Post by idbill »

After upgrading to 4.1.16 r78094, guests won't run without rebooting my machine.
Activity Monitor shows I have 2+ gig free, and my guest is set to us 1024meg.

excerpt from .vbox file:
<Memory RAMSize="1024" PageFusion="false"/>

If I quit all programs, no go. If I reboot, then the VM will start.

Any suggestions would be helpful,
Bill

Error pop up:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Centos 6.2 - X.

Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_NO_MEMORY).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)

This is the information of my environment with the same problem:

VBox Version: 4.1.16-78094-OSX w/ExtPack 4.1.16-78094
Host Configuration: Mac OS X 10.6.2, 4 GB RAM, Free Mem at VM startup 1.4 GB
Guest Configuration: WinXP 32 bits, 900MB Ram, 1 x NAT network interface.
Attached is the log file with the error.

After downgraded to previous VBox version, I was able to startup the VM, I don't restarted the host OS, just de-installed 4.1.16 version and installed back the version 4.1.14-77440.

Same issue with 10.5.8 + 4.1.16 r78094.

If I start-up a Vista guest with 1.5GB RAM, then regardless of whether I close it down or save its state, I cannot start any other guest session unless I reboot the laptop.

If I start-up an NT guest with 128MB RAM then I do not get the problem....until I try the Vista guest again.

You say you allocated 1024M to the guest but you don't have that much available.

I guess you ignored my 1st report of the issue... where it says:

00:00:00.979 DMI Product Name: MacBookPro3,1
00:00:00.980 DMI Product Version: 1.0
00:00:00.981 Host RAM: 4096MB RAM, available: 2063MB
00:00:01.090 Power up failed (vrc=VERR_NO_MEMORY, rc=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0X80004005))

I've been using Virtualbox for 6 months without any memory issues and with this latest version, I am required to reboot to consistently run a VM.

I just rebooted, and started up a VM. I have quit the VM and have not been able to repeat the error, but then again I rebooted my machine 10 minutes ago.

So...my ignorant guess is that the available ram is being calculated differently then it used to in pre-4.1.16 versions.
Possibly it is calculating contiguous memory?

This is my day:
- I go to work
- I start my VM
- I work
- I shutdown my VM
- I go home
- I sleep
(repeat)

Generally I don't reboot my machine very often... maybe once every other week. (It's not like I run windows!)
So I can understand that the free memory will become fractured over time, and I assume that the VM would run much better with contiguous memory. In fact I have the .vdi on an external firewire 800 drive for this very reason, and optimize the drive so that the files are contiguous.

So, the next time I'll get the error (probably tomorrow), I'll send you another log.

Attached is a successful log... for a baseline comparison

I didn't ignore your previous post. I got notified that you had posted, read the log and saw that error I posted.

Never the less posting more log files here will not help to solve this issue. I am seeing several more and you or someone that is having this error needs to post a ticket at bugtracker so the DEVs can see what is really going on since this appears to be a regression.
