3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
Just one question:
since Wheezy upgraded xorg-server to 1.12, 3D-acceleration (GNOME-shell) no longer works. While VBox is supposed to support xorg-server 1.12:
Is this a temporarly bug in Wheezy or is something in the guest-additions missing?
With best regards,
Ingo

What version of VirtualBox are you using?

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
Changelog:
Version 4.1.10 (2012-03-13)
Linux Additions: added support for X.Org Server 1.12
Are you sure the guest additions are up to date and are from VirtualBox.org in case the Debian folks have not updated their version yet?

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
I do know that X-server 1.12 should be supported by VBox 4.1.14.Perryg wrote:Changelog:

Wheezy had VBox-(additions) before the xserver update in version 4.1.12. Then x-server was updated and VBox-guest-x11 was removed., So I installed Oracle-Additions 4.1.14 from the contained iso to match my host version of VBox. But this did not bring back 3D-acceleration.
Today Debian moved VBox 4.1.14 to Testing and I un-installed Oracle guest-additions and installed Wheezy's packages:
Code: Select all
virtualbox-guest-utils
virtualbox-guest-x11
virtualbox-guest-dkms

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
I don't know what to tell you. I know that I use the VirtualBox.org version of VirtualBox and the associated guest additions and have no issue with Gnome3 or 3D acceleration in debian based hosts or guests.
I also know that it is usually not a good idea to mix the different builds such as Debain VirtualBox and VirtualBox guest additions. Different distros take the source code and change it to the way they think it should be. This makes it impossible to support.

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
Please consider this just as a question, not a complaint. I also have other VM's that perform fine with 3D-acceleration here.
The only exception is Wheezy-(amd64) guest since X-server was updated to 1.12. It was working fine with X-server 1.11. I tried wit both, native Oracle-addons 4.1.14 and Debian version 4.1.14 - both suffering from 3D-support. From that one would suspect that Wheezy is the root cause.

True except it works for me. I have only seen one other complaint about this as well and it may have been a Debian guest, but don't remember. From that one would suspect that Wheezy is the root cause.
Post the guests log file (as an attachment) so we can see if anything shows there.
Also remember you can always raise a ticket at bugtracker.

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
Are you really sure? This happended only 2 or 3 days ago and only with Wheezy! Until Thursday Wheezy had X-server 1.11 and 3D was working fine (with Debian's additions v 4.1.12). Friday or Saturday VBox 4.1.12 was completely removed from testing repository and X-server pushed to 1.12, see http://packages.qa.debian.org/v/virtualbox.html. So I then installed Oracle-additions 4.1.14 on Sunday and was unable to get GNOME desktop (3D), just "GNOME-classic".Perryg wrote:True except it works for me.From that one would suspect that Wheezy is the root cause.
Today VBox 4.1.14 was moved into testing and I did:
1) just update the existing system, then
2) un-install Oracle-additions
3) install Debian-additions
with no 3D-support either.
I do attach the latest of 4 guest log's. Unfortunately I cannot attach > 128 kiB at once. Let me know if previous logs are required.

Compiling at the moment on the host that has my SID build. I'll double check here as soon as it is done.

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
OK I was able to re-create this on a new install.
Look in the syslog and see if the following statement is logged during a time when you tried to use Gnome3.
You may even be able to see the cause in the ~/.xsessions-errors file
You can more than likely fix this by removing gnome-shell and gnome-panel, then install them again, then log out and back in with gnome.
Note: backup the guest to be safe as always.

Also saying that the file does not exist.

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
for what it's worth, I couldn't get the Xubuntu 12.10 .iso to boot with 3D enabled. I haven't tried enabling it since I installed it.
edit: seems to work with 3d enabled after install.

Re: 3D-acceleration in Wheezy since xorg-server 1.12 broken
Following your guidelines I could confirm the enty in syslog about missing "/usr/lib/at-spi-registryd". So I didPerryg wrote:OK I was able to re-create this on a new install.

apt-get-install --reinstall gnome-shell gnome-panel
After trying the above, I deleted all existing ~/.xsession-errors files, shut down and booted again into Gnome. I do attach the ~/.xsession-errors file newly createt with this single boot and login into Gnome-(shell).
