X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3

Post by max1e6 »

Use Ubuntu 10.04 host and vb-4.1_4.1.10-76795. Using up to date extension pack. Guest additions installed.

Having trouble with acceleration on Ubuntu 10.04 host for both Windows and Linux guests.. Have found similar (unanswered posts.)
Seeing 2D/3D options greyed-out. Have tried manually editing xml (crashes). Have tried roll backs on both VBox and Xorg.

(Have nvidia GeForce 500 series. Searching synaptic for open-gl I have libcluster installed. Searching for opengl I have libqt4, libglitz, libgl1-mesa/libglu1-mesa, and compwiz installed but not freeglut.)

All this seemed to work once. Have configured for no acceleration for now and I'm running.

Would like to get acceleration working. Any ideas?

I would uninstall VirtualBox and then install it again.
Where did you get the 4.1.8 version, here or Ubuntu?

Hi,

Completely uninstalled then reinstalled (2x), once to 10.10 then to 10.8.

I get my stuff from Oracle.

I have verified that this did once work.

There was an issue with a few when they updated to 4.1.8 where the 3D was greyed out, and that is why I suggested to remove and install. AFAIK 4.1.10 does not have this issue. See ticket here. https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10071

I saw that.

Completely uninstalled virtual box. Reinstalled virtualbox-4.1_4.1.10-76795~Ubuntu~lucid_amd64.deb

and

/home/max/Downloads/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.10-76795.vbox-extpack

I still have an acceleration problem. The 3D checkbox is (now) checkable, but 2D is still greyed out. When 3D is checked, the non-optimal warning "...However, 3D acceleration is not working on the current host setup so you will not be able to start the VM."

As expected, when started, it crashes.

2D will be greyed out if the guest is Linux as it is not supported. However it sounds like you need to give some attention to the host.

Yes, I just can't figure it out. What could it be?

I bet http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php can help you with the Ubuntu host issues.
Big thing is to get glxgears to work properly on the host then the 3D acceleration should work on the guest.

OK, I got it fixed. Here's what I did:

I completely uninstalled my nvidia driver then downloaded the driver from the Nvidia website (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.20.run).

I installed the new driver from recovery mode and rebooted into low graphics mode to configure.

All my VBox checkboxes work now.

Not sure why my configuration went bad in the first place. I noticed one other symptom; the NVIDIA xserver settings application (System>Administration) would crash when I attempted to view OpenwGl/GLX Information. I suspect the problem originated with a Ubuntu update for xorg. I learned once before to be wary of xorg updates on another computer I use but I became complacent.

Anyway, I hope this can help others who stumble on this trouble.
