Windows 8?
Re: Windows 8?
Hi,
I installed Windows 8 x64 CP on VirtualBox-4.1.8-75467-Win and it worked ok.
Today I upgraded to VirtualBox-4.1.10-76795-Win and installed new Guest Additions.
Now I see windows boots up -> Shows LogIn Screen -> Enter password -> Black Screen...
I cannot see anything from there.
(2D and 3D Accelerator is enabled)
It is ok if I boot to Safe Mode.
It is ok if I uninstall Guest additions, but slower.
Is there any known solution/cause for this black screen after logIn?

We are not aware of this problem. To localize it, could youBendras wrote:..Now I see windows boots up -> Shows LogIn Screen -> Enter password -> Black Screen...
1. Attach a VM log file of the case win8 is working correctly. (for VBox 4.1.
2. Check whether win8 is still working correctly when VBox 4.1.10 is used, but Guest additions are still 4.1.8. Attach a VM log for this case as well.
3. Attach a VM log file of the case win8 is not working correctly. (for VBox 4.1.10)
Re: Windows 8?
It is even worse for me - I got a blank screen after installing the Guest Additions with the latest virtualbox, and had to restore Windows 8 to the last system restore point - unfortunately to before the previous guest additions were installed.
If you need logs, please let me know, but the problem seems to be in the video or other driver.
I understand that you might not have this working for Win8 - but please have the system create a restore point BEFORE the guest additions. That will really help on any OS, and let people recover from problems like this.
At least I have a functioning system again, but repairing a Win 8 installation is harder - they hid safe mode, and it has to be enabled from within a functioning Windows 8 system! I had to boot off the installation CD image.
If you do want logs, please give explicit instructions to get them.
And please consider automatically causing a system restore point before installing the guest additions drivers. It will make recovering much easier in ALL operating systems, supported and unsupported.

Re: Windows 8?
I had the same issue -- my Win8-64 CP VM gave me a blank screen after installing the 4.1.10 guest additions after installing the WDDM video driver. I had not installed the 4.1.8 guest additions.
I set up a *new* Win8-64 VM starting with 4.1.10 -- and the guest additions installed without issue this time.

Re: Windows 8?
The logs are placed in the "Logs" directory of you VM directory on the host, which is ~/VirtualBox VMs/<vm_name> by default.sbk-a wrote:..If you do want logs, please give explicit instructions to get them..
Re: Windows 8?
This could be because your old VM did not have 3D acceleration enabled or had less than 128M VRAM assigned.stevemaser wrote:I had the same issue -- my Win8-64 CP VM gave me a blank screen after installing the 4.1.10 guest additions after installing the WDDM video driver. Starting VBox 4.1.10 the new VM wizard correctly assigns this settings for Win8 VMs on VM creation. This was not true for pre-4.1.10 unfortunately.
To all having a black screen issue in Windows 8 after VirtualBox Guest Additions installation: please make sure you have 3D acceleration enabled in you VM settings or have set VM VRAM size to at least 128M.
Re: Windows 8?
Will this be useful since it is Windows 8 that does not work? It seems something in the tools is incompatible.
If it will help, I'll send logs.

Re: Windows 8?
What if my computer does not support the Acceleration [X] Enable VT-X/AMD-V [X] Enable Nested Paging function? Is there any way around it to install Windows 8?
Re: Windows 8?
Did you check the BIOS? I have two HP laptops (Intel Core i5) and there is a BIOS setting that enables VT-X.alfredr wrote:What if my computer does not support the Acceleration [X] Enable VT-X/AMD-V [X] Enable Nested Paging function? Is there any way around it to install Windows 8?
Works fine, except for the amount of memory. I give Win8 2 GB on my 4GB system and I can't run much else. 3GB on the 6GB system runs much better.
Re: Windows 8?
That fixed it. I did both, enable 3D and increase to 124Mmisha wrote:To all having a black screen issue in Windows 8 after VirtualBox Guest Additions installation: please make sure you have 3D acceleration enabled in you VM settings or have set VM VRAM size to at least 128M.
Now it gets the entire 2nd monitor instead of 1024! Great!
So now it works better than before.
Thank you for this fix
Re: Windows 8?
Well, it looks nice and now runs at 1920x1080 - but no metro-style app works.
Dropping to 1024x768 and upping the video memory doesn't solve the problem.
Still trying to find settings that work.
At least I created a system restore point before installing the system tools.

Re: Windows 8?
I had a machine that worked in 4.1.8. I upgraded VB to 4.1.10, and it still worked. I installed 4.1.10 Guest Additions, and it stopped working. I then created a new VM in 4.1.10 and reinstalled Win8, and it ran fine. I then installed Guest Additions, and when the "Reboot" screen appeared, the display was very wonky. I hit enter (as I couldn't seem to control the mouse properly) and when the system rebooted, the screen was just black.
Have tried increasing video memory to max (256MB), have tried disabling/enabling 2D and 3D...

We are aware about Metro apps issue. I will post here a test build with the fix for it shortly..sbk-a wrote:Well, it looks nice and now runs at 1920x1080 - but no metro-style app works.
Re: Windows 8?
Please attach here VM logs for the case it was working OK (with 4.1.8 additions) and for the case it was not working (with 4.1.10 additions).hitch wrote:I had a machine that worked in 4.1.8. I upgraded VB to 4.1.10, and it still worked. I installed 4.1.10 Guest Additions, and it stopped working..

Re: Windows 8?
Same here. After installation of GA 4.1.10 on clean Windows 8 CP 64-bit install I've got black screen after reboot. Host is Windows 7 64-bit.
GA 4.1.8 with WDDM driver did not work for me either and I've also tried installation in safe mode.
