Mountain Lion

Post by Komet »

Hello,

anybody tried to run VirtualBox on Mac OS 10.8 Developer Preview (Mountain Lion)? Any chance that this will work?

Hi,
I have just tested it some minutes ago....
The VirtualBox interface starts but when I launch my machine Ubuntu, it display the black window (where we should see the Ubuntu starting) and after a few seconds, the MacOs stops and ask to shut down the computer by pressing the power button some seconds.
I have tried to change some parameters... no success...

If anyone has a solution, please let me know....

Why don't you talk to Apple and complain that they broke VirtualBox again?

Other than that, all you can do is wait. Fixing issues with unreleased software has very low priority for us.

You are totally right, each time Apple comes with a new OS, they introduce a lot of problems for the Software developers (I am also a developer and I know these problems).
So we will wait... I guess we will be informed about a VBox release compatible with this S.... OS

I have opened ticket #10267. Summary: While it would be nice to have virtualbox support 10.8, at a minimum, virtualbox should check the OS version and if 10.8, display a message indicating that it is not yet supported.

Why should the devs spend time worrying about compatibility with an OS that is still in beta and so may have problems even on native hardware?

Just in case it isn't obvious...

Reporting bugs against unreleased software which is available to only a very limited number of people (and I really hope anyone who isn't an Apple Mac dev program member has the decency to keep their mouth shut) just wastes everyone's time. We know about the problem, it has a very low priority. We don't know how representative the current DP is of the final release. We really have better things to do.

That's not to say we won't look into this, but opening tickets about it is making it less likely, not more, because then someone has to spend their time dealing with a pointless ticket.

If you wish, report this to Apple, since they broke VirtualBox so to speak. They probably won't be inclined to spend any cycles on it either.

Patience is a virtue. I know it's hard.

I think documenting the current state is a good start. It allows other developers testing 10.8 to know it's not just them, but a known issue that VirtualBox won't work with their OS X build at this time. This post, and a ticket if the official bug tracker, both achieve that, and I think we can let it rest for a while, at least until the next developer preview is out, at which point we can revisit this, if only to discuss if that helped or not.

I'm pretty sure they are interested in anything that make their OS completely freeze. I would be surprised if this wasn't fixed in the next DP. At the very least, it would become a regular crash, and not a automatic-reboot-required like it is now.

Just found this from the other virtual machine vendors (Parallels and VMWare), try booting Mountain Lion in 32-bit mode and start VirtualBox.
It allowed me to run a Windows XP sofar, even runs an OpenSuse 64 bit (although graphics are a bit messed up).

So, this may be a work-around for some of you out there.

Reboot the mac, hold the 3 and 2 key during boot to boot the 32-bit MTL kernel and you're off....

(you can check the 32-bit mode being active in Terminal with "uname -a", will show i386 at the end of the response line)

I can report that using 32-bit mode allows you to run Windows 7 guests as well. It is still crashing (just VB) for me when I try to install the USB 2.0 et cetera extension pack.
