Folder Sharing

Post by tom.rogers »

I have an issue with folder sharing, I have installed the Guest additions and set up a folder on my host os (Mac OS X Lion) named 'OS Transfer', I have added this in the folder sharing options and currently have it mounted manually using command line (although originally had it mounted automatically and the problem was the same). When i get the folder mounted and then open it in windows explorer, the guest OS stalls for a second or two and then shuts down instantly. Not sure if shuts down is right really, just sort of instantly goes blank and then restarts itself. I have no idea what to do? Have tried reinstalling guest additions with no difference. My guest OS is Windows 7 Professional and Host OS, as i said above, is Mac OS X Lion.

Please help :)

Post the guests log file (as an attachment) after the next reboot issue.
You may need to post log 0 and log 1 so we can actually catch the event.

the guest os is now failing to connect to the shared folder (displaying can not reconnect all network drives bubble in system tray on start up). the first time this happened i managed to remount the folder, but now can not even do that. log files are attached.

You need to download and install the Extension Pack if you want to use USB.

Code: Select all

00:00:00.356 Installed Extension Packs:
00:00:00.356 None installed!

Code: Select all

00:00:37.717 AIOMgr: Host limits number of active IO requests to 16. Expect a performance impact.
viewtopic.php?f=8&p=159212

Unfortunately I do not see a reason for the shared folders yet. Please see below:
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

i'll get this extension pack, although i was not aware that i was using USB? why do you say that you see no reason for the folder sharing? is there another way to transfer files between the host and guest os'?

That's what I mean. I see no shared folders. So if the guest is still rebooting it must be due to something else.
So is the guest still rebooting on you?

worked out why i could no longer mount the shared folder. somehow it had removed itself from the settings, probably why you can see no sign of it? shall i post log files or the show info thing again? the host cache option and extension pack have not helped. the problem is still persisting.

No you need to fix the rebooting issue first.
You say this did work before and for a while?
Can you start the Windows guest in safe mode (press F8 at boot), and see if it stays going for a while?

the folder share has never worked properly and the reboot issue only happens when i try to open the shared folder. the shared folder issue is the reboot issue.

So the guest is running fine now that there is no shared folder. Good.
Start the guest and once it is running click on devices at the top and then shared folder.
Select other to open a file browse window and drill down to the folder you want to use.
In the name type share or some single easy work and select permanent (do not select auto-mount)

This all assumes that you have the guest additions installed (in the guest)
See if the share shows under the network vboxsrv and let me know

did all of that, it is not appearing in the network. i have nothing in the network. the only two things that are different now are the name and the permanent check box, what does this actually mean, should that stop virtual box from continually removing the share? should i try to mount the share in command line again? this usually seems to work, as i said, network is completely empty. windows just says that i am not connected to any networks in one of those yellow bar things at the top of the window.

This somewhat confuses me. Could you post a screen shot of it?

You can mount this manually with

Code: Select all

net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename -p
But I find it odd that you do not see it under the network. As you can see the \\vboxsrv stands for a network share, even though it is not truly on the network.
