Aero doesnt work with Intel Graphics?

Post by Tourniquet »

Hey, i tested the beta and the stabel 4.1.2 on my pc and it works all good (except playing video).

On my other pc with the on board graphics from my intel i7 2600S aero doesnt work at all, it wont even start. The windows experience index crashes, the troubleshouter crashes =/

So i wanted to ask if there is an incompatibility with intel graphiccards, or is there some kind of workaround or something?

Anything to add to this insufficient amount of information?

Moved to Windows Guests. 4.1.2 is not a beta release.

For example Lenovo T400 laptop, Intel 4 Series Expresss Chipset Family, driver 6.14.10.5355 (latest! With no latest driver VB 4.1 just crash at boot time)
If I install Win7 to this laptop (as a normal OS), then Aero works perfectly (=> hardware is Aero-ready).
If I install an WinXP to this laptop as host system + Win 7 as guest, then Aero don't works at all.

I have the same problem on my early 2011 Macbook pro with the Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Works great with the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.

That is not the video driver. And Aero may work on the Host, but that doesn't mean it's OpenGL capable. Intel is known for DX support only. Only their HD series of integrated graphics, that's the stand alone chip, have OpenGL support in the hardware. It's quite possible that their CPU/GPU combination have the same flaw and lack hardware OpenGL acceleration. You have to verify that yourself.

I think this is my video card & display driver. Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. (Intel Corp. 2011.04.22, signed by WHQ)
(did you mean motherboard? chipset is "Mobile Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset")

I use WDDM driver, it is not enough for Aero?
The point is, that my laptop won't work with Aero in guest?

Intel states here, that this is an OpenGL capable card:

Haha, that article is about their Integrated Graphics, a dedicated chip that's part of a chipset and is located on the motherboard. The GPU on/in your sandy-bridge CPU is no such thing. Intel calls it a Processor Graphics, if we believe this site.

Okay, I have an integrated graphics, not a standalone GPU. I belive you :)
This integrated stuff can work with Aero and this is OpenGL capable as well, isn't?
But guest's aero don't work.

No, you don't have an integrated graphics, you have an processor graphics. Your video card is not on the motherboard, nor as a separate card in a PCI-e slot. Yours is integrated in the CPU. Remove the CPU and put another one in that doesn't have a GPU inside will give you no video whatsoever. Since this is a new kind of video processors, you have to look around to see if it actually supports OpenGL or not. If it does, then you're obviously missing something. And why all this trouble for Aero that doesn't work well?

I checked the Lenovo's documentation, this "graphics renderer" supports the OpenGL up to 2.1

I checked the VBox.log too, I found this
00:02:11.525 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VENDOR: Intel
00:02:11.525 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_RENDERER: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
00:02:11.525 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VERSION: 2.1.0 - Build 6.14.10.5355
00:02:11.525 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_EXTENSIONS: GL_EXT_blend_minmax ...... ...... GL_ARB_vertex_array_object
00:02:17.639 Guest Additions capability report: (0x1) seamless: yes, hostWindowMapping: no, graphics: no
00:02:18.028 Guest Additions capability report: (0x5) seamless: yes, hostWindowMapping: no, graphics: yes

I verified with GLview (http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/) every test passed (up to 2.1)

I believe this video card (or something) obviously support the OpenGL properly. But I experience exactly same what Tourniquet wrote.

I can confirm the issue with Intel HD Graphics not working. I am using Intel HD 3000 using 965GM chipset.

Info:

* Accelerator Information *

Accelerator in Use: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
Video BIOS: 1471.0
Current Graphics Mode: 1280 by 800 True Color (60 Hz)
Driver Version: 8.14.10.1930

OpenGL is indeed supported. Once I enabled 3D acceleration, BAM!!! BSOD!!! so much for areo support!!! lolx.

Well, Aero is experimental anyway. And you do have to have 3D enabled in the VM settings, else it won't work at all. Installing the GA with 3D enabled, but without answering yes to the question will install the WDDM driver. Else you get the WineD3D driver. Installation has to be done in normal mode as well, safe mode may not work for the WDDM driver.

Where did it bsod, host or guest? In any way, please try the latest VBox 4.1.6 and latest 4.1.6 Guest Additions and let me know how Aero works for you.
In case it does not work, please attach the VM log file here, and a [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263 minidump] in case it BSODs.
