unable to start VirtualBox

Post by jkirkhart »

I'm running a Dell Studio 1555 with win7 x64 with a Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4 GB of ram and plenty of free HD space.

I have installed VirtualBox, and I am unable to get the program started. I've tried rebooting, uninstalling and reinstalling, running the install as administrator, etc., and every time VirtualBox is launched, the computer thinks for a few seconds, then the process dies. In looking at the log file, this is what I have available:
VirtualBox (XP)COM Server 4.1.2 r73507 win.amd64 (Aug 15 2011 14:29:50) release log
00:00:00.125 main Log opened 2011-09-24T04:00:38.231080900Z
00:00:00.125 main OS Product: Windows 7
00:00:00.125 main OS Release: 6.1.7601
00:00:00.125 main Executable: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.exe
00:00:00.125 main Process ID: 6788
00:00:00.125 main Package type: WINDOWS_64BITS_GENERIC
00:00:00.905 usbLibDevCfgDrGet: DeviceIoControl 1 fail winEr (31)
00:00:02.059 VDInit finished

I've been unable to find anything specific to my situation with this error. I'm guessing there's a USB problem. doestn' seem to matter if I have the USB bits installed or not.

What am I missing?

Thanks for the quick response! I double-clicked on the extension pack, but aside from a few seconds ofthe cursor going to "hourglass" mode, nothing else happens, minutes later. I don't see anything in the log about the installation of the extension pack failing, but I could be looking in the wrong file.

I am seeing a bit of this here and do not have a definite answer as to why.
I believe that if you remove the version that you are using and then install Version 4.0.12 along with the 4.0.12 Extension Pack. It should work. Afterwards you should be able to update to the newer version in you like.

I tried installing 4.0.12, and I've even rebooted, but when I double-click on the VirtualBox program icon, I can see it start up in the task manager for a few seconds, then it dies. but now I'm not even seeing new log files in C:\Users\username\.VirtualBox...most recent log is 9/24, which is the last time I ran 4.1.2.

also, out of curiosity, if the virtualbox exe is not running, can I even install the extension pack?

I doubt it will. First you need to find out why the VirtualBox package is not working? Assuming that it installs without errors you would need to look at the hosts system logs or install logs to see what the problem really is.

I don't see any errors reported in the event viewer for the installation, there are several information messages, but they all look normal, with the final install message of:
Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.0.12. Product Version: 4.0.12. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Oracle Corporation. Installation success or error status: 0.

But within a minute, I then see this in the application log:
Faulting application name: VirtualBox.exe, version: 4.0.12.0, time stamp: 0x4e205d46
Faulting module name: Pen_Tablet.dll, version: 5.2.1.6, time stamp: 0x4b0aec46
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000006844
Faulting process id: 0x958
Faulting application start time: 0x01cc7c697ef50a16
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\Pen_Tablet.dll
Report Id: bdd24519-e85c-11e0-bcda-002219f088e9

BTW, thanks for your assistance!

Pen_Tablet.dll
This would indicate an issue with the absolute pointer. We are discussing issues with this now. So far it has not caused a failed install but you never know.
I would submit a trouble ticket at bugtracker and post the link from here as well as any and all information you can provide.

Note: you will need to setup an account there as well as it is on a different system. Please also post the ticket number here so others that may have this issue can track the results.

Thanks for the advice. I've created a ticket over there, and provided as much info as I can think of. The link to that ticket is:

finding the pen_tablet.dll issue in the event logs led me to try and update my wacom tablet to the latest drivers.

That seems to have done the trick, VirtualBox is now running. Thanks for your help!

I'll also update the ticket.
