Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi guys.
I configured a headless VM with Ubuntu as guest OS. On a Windows 2003(32bits) Host.
Now Im trying to do the exatly same config on a Windows 2008 R2 Server(x64).
The service starts but the VM doesnt wake-up.
VboxVMService.log:
04/25/2011, 11:43:14 - C:\vms\VBoxVmService.exe
04/25/2011, 11:43:14 - C:\vms\VBoxVmService.ini

04/25/2011, 11:43:14 - Running command: '-nologo startvm "ubuntu" --type headless'.
And nothing happens after that. Any clues? Thanks in advance.
edit: Solved, didnt know VBoxVMService.ini is case sensitive, "Ubuntu" on VM name did the trick.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Another issue now: when trying to ping the VM from another machine Im getting a LOT of packets lost.
The same thing didnt occur if I ping the VM from the Host OS.
Any hints ?

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi.
I'm pretty excited that the VBoxVmService is available, however, I am not able to get my VM to start (I don't think)
My log looks like this:
I think I should see a VBoxHeadless.exe in my task manager (which I don't), and I think I should be able to remote desktop to that machine, however, neither of those are true.
What am I doing wrong?
My ini looks like this:

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi,
Im on Win 7 64x as Host OS, and trying to run Windows 7x32 as a guest OS.
I have installed VBoxVmService-2.2-Fireworks. I currently have installed VirtualBox 4.0.2
I followed the instructions to install, here is my ini file
My Environment variables are setup
I start the service but the VM is not started. The service log shows this
If i use VmServiceControl.exe -su 0 I get this in the log file
I can't work out what has gone wrong. I have even try setting the service to use login details of an administrator. Any ideas on what is wrong with this?

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
VBoxVmService 2.3 - Codename: "Watermelon" has arrived.
Read the announcement here:
LINK: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 5&p=194549
Additional notes:
I am sorry I was not able to follow and reply to all the posts here. I did notice that most of the time people just need a simple reboot to get VBoxVmService work, before they went too fast and started debugging into it, which made things much complicated. We have thus reworked doc in "Watermelon" to always require a reboot after installation. If you still have trouble getting it work, try submit a support ticket at https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_ ... id=1045322.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
I'm having an issue trying to attach a USB device to a VM that's started by VBoxVMService. Everything else works fine, and if I start the VM manually in VBox Manager, then I can attach the USB device without a problem
The output is below
I have tried changing the service to run as the logged in user but that didn't make any difference. I notice from the logs that VBoxVMService sends controlvm commands to shutdown the guest os, so is there a way I can get VBoxVMService to send the controlvm-usbattach command?
Really hope someone can help as this is the last piece to the puzzle!
Many thanks
James
The output is below
Code: Select all
C:\vms>"C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" -nologo controlvm "Ubuntu LTD" usbattach 5f341ad4-662d-466b-8abe-3b36e5b81786

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi James,
I am not sure but this probably has something to do with the so called Session 0 Isolation added in Vista and later.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756986.aspx
The Vms started by VBoxVmService runs in session 0, and the controlvm command runs in session 1 (or others), they just can't see each other. There is no way to get around this limit at this moment.
If I guessed right, this is also why the VM status can't be see by VirtualBox GUI, when started by VBoxVmService.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi FB2000,
Its been awhile since my last post here mainly because our VBoxVmService has been working almost 90% of the time. 90% because 10% of the time, one or two virtual machine somehow slows down to a halt and I need to restart the VM to get it running back to normal. This is where I seem to have encountered a problem with VBoxVMService.
I have been using VBoxVMService since the start of this thread and have moved from WinXP host to Win7 64-bit with WinXP guests. My current VBoxVMService installation if I'm not mistaken is Fireworks (or Reindeer?). The service is running ok. But during those times when a guest has to be restarted, I'll have to issue thru the command line the shutdown command -sd for that particular VM (to avoid interrupting the other VMs that are running). Once it has shutdown, I start the VM using the VBox GUI interface and force a hard reset on the VM. After the VM boots ok, I shut it down again (soft shutdown via Windows). I then restart the service of this VM thru the command line issuing the -su command. It is here that I encounter the problem. The VM wont startup No matter what I do, the status is always in the "saved" mode. This is always the case everytime I go thru this procedure. In such instances, I'll have to restart the whole PC to get the service of that VM (and also the others) running again.
In the earlier versions of VBoxVMService, this procedure works fine. Kindly advise if this is something unique to me only or a bug? Thanks.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
AllenL,
I don't see why you need such a complicated process just to restart the VM. If you want to shutdown the VM cleanly why not just using acpipowerbutton? You could change it back to savestate later.
I do know why your process is causing trouble on Win7, however. The reason for that is as I mentioned on above post -- Session 0 isolation on Vista and later. VirtualBox GUI and VBoxVmService processes just can't see each other and can't share status. This is not a problem for XP and 2003.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
Hi FB2000,
Thanks for the reply.
for the ACPIpowerbutton, if you are refering to this function on the VM GUI, the reason why I have not been using this is because it usually takes a long time for the VM to shutdown specially if the VM is already unstable. I'll look into this and try again when we encounter an unstable VM.

I was talking about the acpipowerbutton option for ShutdownMethod in VBoxVmService.ini.AllenL wrote: for the ACPIpowerbutton, if you are refering to this function on the VM GUI, the reason why I have not been using this is because it usually takes a long time for the VM to shutdown specially if the VM is already unstable. Hi FB2000,
Let me reset the config file to acpipowerbutton and I'll observe if there are any improvements; maybe tweak the WaitToKill delay if the VM shutdown requires a longer time. Thanks.

Re: [VBoxVmService] -> Discussion & Support
I am very happy user of vmservice running on server 2003 host. I would like to move to server 20003 64bit for more memory and I have searched the threads but cant seem to find a list of compatibility anywhere. Can someone confirm this runs on x64.
Thank you for this piece of software.

It runs on both x86 and x64 Windows.
