Aero slow in beta2, good in beta1

Post by ErikDJ »

In 4.1 beta1, Aero in Win7 (both 32- and 64-bit) work very well (WinVista 32-bit Host), in beta2 Aero is very slow. I downgraded the Guest Additions back tot 4.1 beta1 (VirtalBox Manager is still beta2, also the Extension Pack) and now Aero works very well again. So I think there's something wrong with the beta2 Guest Additions.

I also see areo a lot slower with guest additions beta 2 vs beta 1.

Also, I am running Win7 x64 host, + Win7 x64 guest, with aero enabled in guest and full screen, UAC prompts are not appearing, I have to switch out of full screen using Host + F to see UAC prompt :?

Bedrock, change UAC setting to not dim the display, that should help with the UAC prompt not showing up.

Aero is much slower in beta 2 here as well, and also has redraw errors - stuff being left behind when you move a window, things not being drawn at all etc. Was much faster and I saw no drawing issues in beta 1.

Same here for me! Aero in Beta 1 was running very well, and now with Beta 2 Aero is running very very slow and choppy...

To all having the Aero slowdown issue please try the http://www.virtualbox.org/download/test ... tiArch.exe test build to see if the issue is fixed, and let me know whether it works for you.
Note that you need to update guest additions to make it work.

Would it be possible to get the guest additions for this build for us testing with Linux host? I build from SVN but can not generate the Windows GAs. Or are the GAs not affected?

Is the GA the only thing that requires testing, or does it require a VB update as well? 'Cause the problem exists on all Hosts. Providing only a Windows build is excluding the other users from testing.

Here is a link for windows guest additions with the fix http://www.virtualbox.org/download/test ... r72828.iso . Just updating guest additions while using Beta2 host installation should be enough.

Host = Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 (no VT-x) Guest Windows 7 pro 32-bit
I'll test the 64-bit in a little while.

Much better. I can play mine sweeper and solitaire with aero on.
A few things that give a problem is you can't (or I can't) go full screen. Just shows black.
If you go full windowed screen it also goes black but if you wait (up to 2 to 3 minutes) it finally draws but then shows a windows error that explorer.exe caused a problem and gives you a few choices. Selecting to close then causes windows to reload and you are good to go until you change the window size again.

It works a bit better, but when playing solitaire, it still scrambles the game window. There is another issue where I get a black window just before the desktop should show up. When I put the VM in saved state and resume it, all is fine again. This didn't happen before wddm was installed. My Host uses Compiz as window manager, maybe that helps in pinpointing the issue.

With the guest additions update, Aero is running fine again, but I'm also having black screen problems with switching to fullscreen or back to window mode - at least sometimes...

Performance seems a little better, but for my other problem UAC prompt still not visible unless I press Host + F to switch out of full screen, or configure UAC to not display prompts on the secure desktop. I hope this can also be solved
