Backup data inside VirtualBox

Post by mcleanap »

I have been using VirtualBox for a while now using it as my development server. I am a little paranoid, so I run a backup of the VM every night, and I also run a backup of code and data within VirtualBox that backs it up on an external drive.

Do you think the 2nd part is necessary though? I mean....backing up the virtual drive should be enough I would hope.

How are others backing up there data on the VM?

It really depends on how you feel about loosing data. I usually do a VDI backup but I also do a separate data backup to be (feel) safer. At least I fell like I cover myself just in case.
On mission critical guests I actually do two backups one vdi backup and one clone. The way I figure t you can't be too safe.

Ok, it sounds like the routine I have is pretty standard then, and not overkill.

Thanks!

If you are as paranoid as I am about loosing critical data I don't think anything is overkill. I have at times gone so far as triple backups stored at different locations. Really depends on just how critical the guest/data is and how much you want to do a paper chase to recover.
