Windows XP install hangs

Post by a.b. »

Hi!

'm trying to install Windows XP (old CD without any SP) in Virtualbox 1.5.6 (non-ose) on Debian. Now I'm at the graphical part of the installation and Windows is trying to install the devices (The "37-minutes-left" stage) for about an hour, the progress bar is stuck at about 25%.

I already have googled, but everything I could find was is the hint to check the hardware. That's nonsense in this case. WHat else could I do?

You can tell the exact guest config (apic, acpi, vt, ram etc).

The settings are the default ones for Windows XP:

RAM: 192MB
Graphics memory: 8MB
Boot order:Floppy - CD/DVD - Harddisk
ACPI: on
IO-APIC: off
VT-x/AMD-V: off
Shared clipboard: bidirectional
IDE controller in guest: PIIX3
One virtual harddisk as primary master, 10GB
My real CD ROM drive is used: GCR-8523B (/dev/hdd)
No floppy and audio.
Network 0: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973),NAT, cable is plugged in
Serial and USB are disabled

That looks ok. Is it a OEM Recovery CD or a Full Version from XP?

PS: You can play with two settings:

IO-APIC: On
IDE controller in guest: PIIX4

It's a full version, professional to be exact.

Hi

My installations also got stuck there. After a simple "Switching off" of the guest, and starting it up again, windows installation would run into repair mode, and kind of continue more or less where it left off. After doing this process twice, the installation continued without any more problems.

Give it a try!

I was also able to fix it by switching the IDE controller
