VB 4.0.4 and 4.0.6 IO subsystem bug

Post by wireless01 »

Hello,
There is a bug in IO subsystem, which is quite easy to generate.
It is enough to compute cksum on any larger file inside of the guest OS.
And results are as below:
if the cksummed file is stored on a NFS disk, mounted locally to guest OS, then cksum returns correct results
if the same file is copied into local filesystem, then cksum returns quite different results.
I have tested it in the following cobinations Host/Guest OSes :
host : Windows 7 64 bits
guests : Oracle Linux 5.6 64 bits, Solaris10u9, x86, 64 bits
host : Oracle Linux 5.6 64 bits
guests : Oracle Linux 5.6 64 bits, Solaris10u9, x86, 64 bits
hosts : Solaris10u9, 64 bits
guests : Oracle Linux 5.6 64 bits, Solaris10u9, x86, 64 bits
so - because of above I think, that the bug is generic
Cksummed files are around 1gb large
VBox versions, which I have tested are 4.0.4 and 4.0.6
I have tested the cksumm with option "Used host IO cache" both - enabled, and disabled - results are the same.

Unfortunately - due to this fact I am not able to install Oracle RDBMS (and RAC), using above versions of VBox.
Universal Installer returns errors during extraction of some larger files (Invalid Entry , etc)
Must add, that the same files are used to install Oracle RDBMS on some native operating systems, and - they work OK.
Is there anyone, who knows any workaround for this problem ?
Or maybe - is there any way to create the ticket for the problem ?
I am quite new user of VBox - need it to test some Oracle configurations.
Unfortunately - Vmware Server, which seems to be working OK in this aspect - is not available on Solaris platform, which I am using as a host OS, so I need to work with VBox ...

regards

Unfortunately - due to this fact

These kinds of problems that are reproducible should be reported to bugtracker. You will need to setup an account there as it is on a different system.
It would also help if you can post the ticket number here so other can see the progress, add information, or see the final results.

Moving out of suggestions and to Solaris forum

Hello,
OK - but it seems that to create a ticket in the bugtracker I need to install track admin, as without that I cannot create a ticket (lack of privileges).
Also, although I am using Solaris as a host OS, the problem seems to be generic - reproduced on more host OSes than only Solaris, so I do not think, that Solaris forum is the best possible place for the post

You must create an account on bug tracker as indicated above. nothing else to do then you can post a ticket.
I can put this anywhere but since you are more interested in Solaris I put it here since it did not belong in suggestions. I can put it in using VirtualBox which is a generic forum if you like.

Hello again
It's strange, as this time I have managed to create the ticket (previously, when I have been clicking in the "CREATE TICKET" option I have been receiving the message window with the message about lack of privileges.

The ticket # is 8773.

Regarding different forums - that's OK - let's retain it in the Solaris forum - You know the forum better than me - I am absolute beginner.
In the meantime I have downloaded 3.2.12 for solaris - will check if the bug appears in this version too (hope that not - it would be good workaround for my problems :) ).

thanks for the support and regards

Just to add some information :
version 3.2.12 for solaris seems to be not affected by this bug.
checksums on some large files are the same, regardless of their locations.
thanks and regards
