Error loading guests machine with 4.0.0

Post by manublade »

Hi after installed the latest version (4.0.0) on snow leopard i cannot start any Virtual machine.

When i click to start i got an error:

Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).

Codice 'uscita: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Componente: Console
Interfaccia: IConsole {515e8e8d-f932-4d8e-9f32-79a52aead882}

This with all the 3 machines i have, linux, winxp, ms-dos.

Thanks.

P.s. if i return to 3.x series everything is fine.

The same problem here, but running on "Leopard" (10.5.x) host and with "eComstation" (OS/2) as guest.

Hi,

I had the same problem with exactly the same error message that manublade posted (below).
My system:
iMac OS X 10.6.6 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram
VirtualBox 4.0.4 r70112 having virtual Windows7 32bit with 2048MB ram

I AM NOT SURE WHAT YOU CAN BREAK HERE SO PLEASE READ MANUALS, AND USE MY INSTRUCTIONS AT OWN RISK.
I AM A NOOB AND WONT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITIES

My issues were in permissions,
1.
first I tried to install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.0.4-70112 to try if there was tools to help and got permission error message (unfortunately I did not write it down).
I ran "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" in Disk Utility and got Extension Pack up and running

If Disk Utility is new go to Application --> Utilities --> Disk Utility
In Disk Utility click in the left pane on the Hard Disk where OS X is installed --> in the right pane click First Aid and there you find "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"

About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1452

2.
Still no luck with my Virtual W7 to boot so I guessed that the issue could be in the permission of the virtual storage file.
I changed the permissions in my VMs Folder

"OS X HD (where your OS is)" --> "Users" --> "VirtualBox VMs" --> "My VM folder (the folder your VirtualMachine lives)"

by right clicking on "My VM folder" --> "Get Info" --> "Sharing & Permission" --> "Lock icon on right bottom" -->
Privilege staff from Read only --> Read & Write --> click on the "gear icon" between "+-" and "Lock icon" --> Apply to enclosed items...

Somebody could confirm if this makes security or other issues as I was hasty and just changed all the permissions as I was not mood for real trouble shoot.
I don't know if it was that I changed Staff privileges or if my user rights in the Enclosed folders changed but W7 booted up again (I use OS X with normal user privileges not as an Admin).

3.
Summa summarum,
Hope this helps you guys to figure out where the real problem is.
VirtualBox works now for me but I am thinking if I made a security mess by tempering the privileges in VMs folder.
If some one knows a simple tutorial for dummies what kind of risks is in changing permission of user "Staff" and is there are risks in what I explained before I would appreciate those :)

I simply 'repaired disk permissions' in the disk utility and then rebooted my machine. Works just fine now.

Sorry for my english!! jejeje I solved the problem of this with many steps.
First my log error was
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).
Then I Repair the permissions on the disk utility and had a new error like this
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE).
After that I tried to change the permissions on the /usr folder, on the /Applications folder and nothing happened, soooooo I had been crazy!! jejeje I uninstall and reinstalla my VB, and that's works fine!!! it's a big problem of security because we give access 777 to usr folder and Applications folder point less to VB Developers :(, but now works fine!!!!! I hope my experience is helpful for you. Have a nice day!!! :D
