Observations with VirtualBox 1.5.51. OSE 27858 OS2

Post by HerwigB »

First of all: Thanks for the great work guys!

I have been trying Vbox now for several days to do some real work with it, here are my observations: The guest is a freshly installed vanilla WinXP SP2, guest additions installed, VirtualBox.exe, NAT networking.

1.) I have a setup with 3 hd images (System C:, Apps D: and swap E: ). As soon as I have it that way there is a long delay in the boot process. This is 100% reproducible. Looking at the logs I found:

01:00:01.418 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#0: IDLE IMMEDIATE, CmdIf=0xef (-1 usec ago)
01:00:01.418 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#0: aborting current command
01:00:40.156 PIIX3 ATA: Ctl#0: RESET, DevSel=0 AIOIf=1 CmdIf0=0xe1 (-1 usec ago) CmdIf1=0xef (-1 usec ago)
01:00:40.156 PIIX3 ATA: Ctl#0: finished processing RESET
01:00:40.157 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#1: IDLE IMMEDIATE, CmdIf=0xef (-1 usec ago)
01:00:40.157 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#1: aborting current command
01:00:40.184 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#3: IDLE IMMEDIATE, CmdIf=0xef (-1 usec ago)
01:00:40.184 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#3: aborting current command
01:01:21.094 PIIX3 ATA: Ctl#1: RESET, DevSel=0 AIOIf=0 CmdIf0=0xa0 (-1 usec ago) CmdIf1=0xe1 (-1 usec ago)
01:01:21.094 PIIX3 ATA: Ctl#1: finished processing RESET
01:01:21.095 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#2: performing device RESET

Note the 40 sec breaks in there, that is what I see.

As soon as I use only 1 hd image, the delays go away.
I used the PIIX3 setting to be eventually compatible with VboxBFE.

2.) The numpad of the keyboard seems to be out of sync with host quite frequently.

3.) When the mouse cursor hovers over a guest window frame to change size, the mouse cursor does not change, changing size of the window however works normally.

4.) When I minimize the guest window, a VirtualBox icon is visible in the middle of the host screen. First I thought this ought to be in the minimized window viewer, as this icon can be used to maximize/restore etc. the guest window, but in the minimized window viewer there is an icon for the VirtualBox guest, too.

5.) Sometimes I experienced a BSOD in the guest after doing a D'n'D operation in the guest (twice when trying to create a link of "printers and faxes" on the desktop), however it is not reliably reproducible, as several D'n'D operations worked normally (I have my "printers and faxes" link on the desktop now.

The good side: Besides that I really could work very well with it, networks speed is much faster as with VPC/2 (which is important for me).

Keep up the good work guys!

Kind regards,
Herwig

1. Could you try to reproduce it on other hosts to make sure the problem is OS/2 specific?

2. It is stated in the Current Issues section of Readme-OS2.txt I believe.

3. Same as above.

4. Will look.

5. Please try to find a good way to reproduce.

1.) Long delays: Seems to be OS/2 specific, I used the same images on a 1.5.6 Windows x86 host and the delays were not there. The delay betwwen the lines that lasts 40 sec on OS/2, is 1 sec on the Windows host. I will provide the corresponding logs tomorrow.

2.) and 3.) yes, sorry.

5.) I am unable to find a pattern, but it seems that approximately 1 out of 5 D'n'D operations makes the guest BSOD. Is there a way to prevent the BSODed guest from rebooting immediately?

I will keep an eye on this...

Kind regards,
HerwigB.
