Daemon Tools Lite Installation Crash

Post by willygatti »

I downloaded Daemon Tools Lite from Disc Tools on a Windows 7 guest on an Ubuntu 10.10 host. Whenever I try to install Daemon Tools, the setup immediately crashes giving me an error message stating; "Internal setup error. Error code: 256. Contact support." Is this a problem with my VirtualBox setup or Daemon Tools in general?

I believe that it is a Daemon Tools error and you should contact them.

I contacted Daemon Tools by email. When they replied to my message, they told me it is a known issue which appears if I'm using VirtualBox without hardware actualization, and that error 256 means that one of Daemon Tools installer's plugins was not loaded. They also suggested that I should check my system event log for a side by side error. I already checked my system event log, and there was no side by side error. I don't know how to enable hardware actualization, can somebody please help me with enabling it?

That would be in your bios (hardware-v) & VT-x/AMD-v in the VirtualBox settings. This is for 64bit guests to be able to run in VirtualBox or use SMP in 32bit.
Be very careful turning this on with an installed Windows guest. It will force you to install the multi-processor kernel. Microsoft suggests that you do not do it this way but to install with these features already present. It may be possible to use HALu to do this for you if you can locate a valid copy.

I have BIOS revision A17 installed for my Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook which is the most recent BIOS currently available. How do I enable hardware actualization from the BIOS screen?

I would have no idea. I don't have that particular machine. Maybe the Dell sight would have some instruction.

Do be sure that you heed my warning above. You can make you Windows guest inoperable.

Checking http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/notebooks ... s=22&s=dfh shows that you have either of these processors:
T7250: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=31728
T5450: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=30787
T2330: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=32432
Or a celeron thing.

Now, only the first one, the T7250, has VT-x capabilities. Since this laptop can have different processors as it's configuration, I'm pretty sure they don't have VT-x as an option in the BIOS to avoid potential issues with non-VT-x CPUs. Touch luck dude.
