Windows 7 Guest Additions not working

Post by Danny24 »

I installed Windows 7 (64 bit) on a new virtual PC followed by the latest Windows updates, then rebooted. Next I installed AVG 2011 anti virus software and rebooted again. Finally I installed the VMWare Guest Additions and now the Virtual PC wont boot. When I check the details I see this;

It has to be somethig to do with the Guest additions as it was working fine before these were installed.

Does anyone know why it's doing this? :(

Can you boot into safe mode?

Not sure how to do that. If I try and restart the virtual PC I get the option to either start Windows normally (which crashes) or to Launch Startup Repair. I tried this but I then get prompted to restore the computer using system restore (Restore/Cancel). I select Restore and Windows restores itself to pre Guest Additions :(

Don't know if it makes any difference but the same thing happened with a Windows XP installation I just carried out. However, I do have the option to boot in Safe Mode and this does work

Did you install AVG inthe XP VM?
Just clutching at straws but it could be this software causing your problems.
I have XP running ok with an older version of AVG but haven't yet tried the new version.
Uninstall AVG and give it another go.
Perhaps some of the other members have more inspired help for you.
Sorry
Frodo :(

Thanks for your thought Frodo, but as I have since found out it doesn't have anything to do with AVG.

I have just recreated the virtual drive and re-installed XP. I then installed all the windows security fixes, updates and service packs (up to and including SP3). At this stage I haven't installed any other software (including anti virus) and the virtual PC boots OK.

There are three unknown devices which are;

USB Controller
Video Controller
Base System Device

At this stage I take a snapshot to be on the safe side, followed by another reboot. The Virtual PC starts without error.

I now install the Guest Additions by selecting them from the Devices drop down menu. Everything seems to install OK and I'm then prompted to restart, which I do. As soon as this happens I receive the Virtual GUI has stopped working, check on line or close the program. I close the program and restart the Virtual PC, this time selecting Safe Mode. The PC boots fine and I am able to uninstall the Guest Additions. When I then reboot the Virtual PC boots just fine again.

It therefore has to be the Guest Additions but I don't know why.

Can anyone help please? I'm desperate to get this working

Hmmm...

I can tell you that I have Windows 7 (both 32 and 64-bit) guests working fine on my WinXP host on VBox 3.2.8.

It seems your setup is different somehow...
Can you upload the vbox.log on this forum ?

Aha... I think I see it.
Try to disable 2D/3D acceleration. There is a known bug #7670 with some NVIDIA drivers and VBox.
Can you run your VM now ?

Please add more data to the bug above, including your vbox.log
