virtual box 3.2.8 crashes while running windows 98se

Post by henk506 »

I am pretty new to virtual box and am having trouble running windows 98se in it on my computer that is running ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx. When I turn the virtual machine on, a minute or 2 after login it enters guru meditation. Every time I try again the same thing happens. Can someone please help me?!?!

Two Tipps: Install Rain in the guest. And for Audio choose SB16.

I noticed also that it only crashes when I am moving my touchpad. I used only the keyboard and it ran fine. If I move the mouse pointer very slow its ok also. If I move it normal or fast, it crashes.

I then connected to the guest VM from the remote desktop viewer on the host machine. Even though I have a ghost mouse pointer it worked fine through the viewer. As soon as I captured the guest window and moved the mouse pointer it crashed. It looks to me this problem has something to do with the mouse capturing functions. Any one know more about this?

Windows 95.vmdk
First this is (or appears to be) Windows 95 and not Windows 98se, and since it is a vmdk I must ask if this is a vmware transplant?
If so then it could be that you have specific drivers associated with vmware which could be causing some issues.

Another thing that you can check is the absolute pointer under system mother board. If it is enabled than turn it off and try that.

Other than that Windows 95, or 98 are not officially supported.

It's a windows 98se (someone named it 95). And yes it was a transplant from vmware. But I created a new VM from a flesh instal, Win98SE. I am now testing with with that. It is behaving the same.
Thank you for noticing. I should have posting a new config:

I’m also experiencing these triple faults with subsequent guru meditation, randomly, and very frequently.
I’m using VirtualBox 3.2.6 without hardware-assisted virtualization.

People experiencing guru meditations with Win9x guests that were working okay until a few VirtualBox versions ago, I filed a bug report here:
http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/7364
You might want to comment with your experience (and logs).

I am brand new (literally just a few days) using VB. I am using 3.2.8 with hardware virtualization enabled on my Athon cpu. So far I have successfully installed Novell Netware DOS 7 and in another vdi I installed Windows 3.1. There are no mouse issues with NWDOS7 which operates in real mode when using its gui style (really dos ansi graphics) interfaces which have mouse support, but Win31 has serious issues. I tried using the MS Virtual Machine Additions mouse.com driver and then I installed Logitech's old MouswWare 6.43 driver which was for both DOS and Windows 3.1. Either driver experiences the exact same issues when running Win31 in VB -- the mouse movement somewhat trails the physical movements made with my mouse, moving the mouse too quick causes either or both axes to suddenly "zero out" on one axis to either the top/bottom or left/right of the screen, or both. Note that my physical mouse is connected to the host's PS2 port. After observing the erratic behavior of my mouse in Win31, I realized that the issue had to be related to the PS2 report rate being too fast for the Virtual Box code to interpret while running a VM. So on my host system (WinXP) I set my logitech mouse drivers's PS2 mouse report rate down from 100 to 40, and then I restarted the Win31 VM. This solved the problem. While I managed to solve the erratic mouse problem in VB, I should point out that MS Virtual Machine 2007 has no such issues when using MS's VM Additions mouse driver or when using Logitech mouse drivers. It seems to me that the issue is with the PS2 mouse code in VB 3.2.8.

Hehe. This weekend I will be trying a clean install of Win98SE in Virtual Box. I will report if I too experience the same issues described in the above posts.

Just a "Me too" Win98SE VM's crash with the Guru Meditation (Old Amiga fans there ?)

System is an Asus A7VT400 barebones box with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1Gb RAM, both mouse and keyborad connected to PS/2 interfaces, running Fedora 12 x86. Virtual Box 3.2.8 installed from the Oracle Yum repository.

I got this issue with a couple of Win 98 SE VM's I'd created in VBox 3.0.14 with Rain already installed and SB16 support, among other tweaks and updates, and another Win98SE that I just installed from scratch in VBox 3.2.8 and hadn't gotten as far as installing Rain due to the repeating crash.

Tried following the bug report ticket linked earlier in the thread but the virtualbox.org site appeared to be inaccessible to me at the time.

Also tried the Remote Desktop approach using the Linux "rdesktop" command but for some reason this couldn't connect to the Win 98 instance running, probably due to a firewall or SELinux issue. Will check that.
